Red Wolves Advance in SBC Tourney With 60-54 Victory Over Troy

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. (3/6/10) - Trailing by nine with 11 minutes to play, the Arkansas State Red Wolves (13-17) went on a 26-11 run to end the game and advance to the quarterfinals of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament with a 60-54 victory over the Troy Trojans (12-17) Saturday afternoon at the Hot Springs Convention Center.

Senior forward Lyndsay Schlup posted her fourth double-double of the season, finishing with 10 points and 10 rebounds to lead the eighth-seeded Red Wolves.  Senior guard Ebonie Jefferson scored 14 points for ASU, junior forward Shay Scott added 12 points and sophomore guard NeNe Hurst finished with nine points and nine rebounds.

Arkansas State trailed 43-34 when Troy guard Brittnie Davis, who led the ninth-seeded Trojans with 19 points, connected on a basket with 11:06 to play.  The Red Wolves answered Davis' bucket with eight consecutive points, cutting the Trojan lead to 43-41 when Schlup sank two free throws at the 8:24 mark.  Arkansas State tied the game at 47 when Scott scored inside with 5:48 remaining, then went on top for good when Schlup hit two more from the charity stripe with 4:44 to play to give A-State a 49-47 advantage.

"We were assuming it was going to be a game with a lot of hustle-type plays and loose ball plays," said ASU head coach Brian Boyer.  "It was a challenge, but I feel like we won them in the second half.  All the rebounds, loose balls and toughness-type plays, we won them."

The two teams battled to a 31-31 tie in a first half that included five ties and five lead changes.

After trailing on the boards 20-19 at halftime, Arkansas State outrebounded the Trojans 29-17 in the final 20 minutes, including a 12-3 advantage on the offensive glass.  The Red Wolves also blocked two shots in the game, one each from Schlup and Hurst, to set a school record with 128 blocked shots on the season and surpass the old mark of 127 set during the 1987-88 season.

The eighth-seeded Red Wolves now advance to face top-seeded Arkansas-Little Rock Sunday at noon at Summit Arena.
