JACKSON, Tenn. (3/14/16) – Every Arkansas State men's golfer competing in the Grover Page Classic ended the 54-hole tournament's first day among the top-25 individual leaders, helping the Red Wolves jump out to a first-place standing among 12 teams through two rounds played Monday at the Jackson Country Club.
The Red Wolves posted a combined 10-under-par 566, giving them a three-stroke lead over second-place UT Martin and a six-stroke cushion against third-place Southern Illinois heading into Tuesday's final round. A-State began play with a 282, which tied the lowest score of the day among all participating teams, and followed with a 284 for the second round.
Andrew Huseman led the Red Wolves with a 5-under 139, which included a 69 and 70 for the first and second rounds, respectively. The sophomore completed the first 18 holes in fifth place, but climbed to the top of the leaderboard by the conclusion of the second round. He currently holds a one-stroke lead over three players tied for second place, including Murray State's Preston French, UT Martin's Hunter Richardson and Nicholls State's Jack Lee.
True freshman Cameron McRae posted a first-round 70 that placed him tied for 15th, but moved up 10 spots with a season-best 69 for the second 18 holes. Competing as an individual, McRae recorded a 2-under 142 total and will be looking to top his season-best finish of eighth place at the A-State Fall Beach Classic.
Also tied for fifth place, senior Oswin Schlenkrich recorded a first-round 68 that put him in a tie for second. He tacked on six strokes to that total in the second round, but fell just three places in the standings.
Freshman Joel Wendin and sophomore Tanner Napier both shot an even-par 144 to end the day tied for 12th place. Wendin carded a 72 for each round, while Napier improved his score from an initial 75 to a 69 during the following round.
Also competing for A-State, senior Seth Garner posted a combined 146 and is currently tied for 24th place. He has four top-25 finishes this season, including a season-best third-place showing at the Loyola Intercollegiate earlier this spring.
