@stAtebowling Completes First Day of Music City Classic

SMYRNA, Tenn. (3/18/16) – The Arkansas State women's bowling team finished the first day of competition at the Columbia 300 Music City Classic Friday at the Smyrna Bowling Center in Smyrna, Tenn., with a 3-3 record and in seventh place of the 30-team event.

The No. 2 Red Wolves (68-29) began the day with a 974-857 over No. 11 Maryland-Eastern Shore, but dropped a 941-911 decision to No. 25 Jackson State in its second match of the day. Arkansas State bounced back with a 986-841 victory over Alabama State, but lost to No. 3 Vanderbilt 955-919 to fall to 2-2 on the day. The team responded once again with a win, this one a 940-808 triumph versus Felician College, before falling to No. 21 Adelphi by a score of 949-923 to end the day.

A-State finished the day with a total pinfall of 5,653, which was 15 pins behind the host team Vandy's 5,668. Long Island University-Brooklyn leads the field with a pinfall of 5,897, while Nebraska is second with 5,852 pins. McKendree (5,807 pins), Sam Houston State (5,707 pins), and Stephen F. Austin (5,672) rounded out the top five after the first day of competition. Nebraska and Vanderbilt were the only schools to go 6-0 on the day.

Saturday's action begins at 9:30 a.m. with all of the teams participating in six traditional team matches.
