JONESBORO, Ark. (4/13/16) – The Arkansas State women's basketball team has announced the signing of Jonesboro High School product Starr Taylor to a National Letter of Intent to continue her collegiate career with the Red Wolves next season.
The 5-foot-6 point guard averaged 15.0 points, 4.7 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 2.5 steals per contest for the Lady Hurricane, in route to leading the program to its first ever state championship.
“With the graduation of five senior starters this is one of the most important recruiting classes during my time here at Arkansas State,” A-State head coach Brian Boyer said. “Because of this, I'm excited about the addition of Starr Taylor to our roster. Athletically, Starr will immediately be able to compete in the Sun Belt Conference.”
Taylor, who is the daughter of A-State assistant football coach Trooper Taylor, led Jonesboro in scoring during the 2015-16 season, while knocking down 44 percent of her shots from the field. She shot 35 percent from beyond the arc and earned Arkansas Activities Association 6A All-State honors for the second time in her career.
A two-time 7A/6A-East All-Conference pick, Taylor helped Jonesboro to three straight victories in the Class 6A state tournament with wins over two-time defending champion Greenwood (34-32) and a semifinal victory over El Dorado (61-46). In the state finals, the Lady Hurricane took down Russellville 50-43 to claim the Class 6A state championship. Taylor earned 6A All-Tournament Team honors and was named the tournament's most valuable player.
“I expect her to make an immediate impact on our team with her defensive ability,” Boyer added. “I have seen Starr change the outcome of games with her defense. She has good floor vision, is a good decision maker and her ability to score has improved greatly over the past year. Starr fits our program. Both on the court and off the court she is the type of person that I want in my program.”
Taylor is the fifth signee for the Red Wolves' women's basketball program this year, joining Madison Heckert, Jada Ford, Tori Sewell and Payton Tennison to the signing class.
