JONESBORO, Ark. (7/7/16) – Arkansas State has not only placed a school-record number of student-athletes on the Women's Golf Coaches Association's (WGCA) 2015-16 All-American Scholar Team, its six selections also tied the second most in the nation.
Announced this week, the 828 WGCA All-American Scholars included A-State's Maci Brooks, Sarah Childers, Beth Ann Compton, Aracelly Jimenez Rios, Olivia Loiacano and Emma Miller.
“I am so proud of these young ladies for their success on the golf course and in the classroom,” said A-State head coach M.J. Desbiens Shaw. “Their hard work and dedication has made them earn this amazing award. It's nice to be recognized at that level amongst all the schools in the country.”
The Red Wolves tied Southern Illinois and the University of Findlay for the second most selections in the nation behind only Yale's eight. The All-American Scholar Team requires a minimum 3.50 cumulative GPA in order to be eligible for the prestigious honor. The Red Wolves actually had seven student-athletes compile at least a 3.50 cumulative GPA during the 2015-16 academic year, although only six were eligible for the WGCA recognition because they have to compete in at least 50 percent of the team's tournaments.
Arkansas State has now placed multiple student-athletes on the list six consecutive years. Brooks, a junior last season, became the third A-State women's golfer in school history to achieve the recognition three different times, joining Anna Carling and Jennifer Loiacano.
Olivia Loiacano and Childers, both sophomores in 2015-16, made their second consecutive appearance on the lineup, while Miller, Compton and Jimenez Rios were tabbed All-American Scholars for the first time.
