JONESBORO, Ark. (10/13/16) – The Arkansas State baseball program's “Alumni Weekend” for former players and their families will feature former A-State and current Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim pitcher Daniel Wright along with several other former Red Wolves currently playing in Minor League Baseball.
The event, being held Oct. 14-15 in conjunction with the Red Wolves' football homecoming festivities, will begin Friday night with the Alumni Baseball Game that will put former players against the current A-State baseball team. Pregame activities will begin at 6 p.m. with first pitch set for 7 p.m.
The weekend continues with an A-State Baseball Alumni Golf Tournament set for Saturday morning. Registration will get underway at 7:30 a.m. at Sage Meadows Country Club with a shotgun start for the event set for 8 a.m. Food and drinks will be served at noon during the tournament. Cost to play is $75 per person or $300 per foursome for 18 Holes and includes green fees, cart, and range balls.
Wright, along with current minor leaguers Chandler Hawkins (St. Louis Cardinals organization), Stuart Levy (Baltimore Orioles organization), and Zach George (Pittsburgh Pirates), will be in attendance.
Arkansas State's football team will play South Alabama Oct. 15 at 6 p.m. and Wright will be honored during the game. A native of Bartlett, Tenn., Wright made his MLB debut with the Cincinnati Reds May 24 against the Los Angeles Dodgers. He was claimed off waivers by the Angels in early September and picked up his first MLB win Sept. 30 in his final start of the season against the Houston Astros. He went six innings and gave up one run on six hits with no walks and five punch outs. He is the first A-State baseball player to play in the majors since Matt Whiteside in 2005.
Hawkins advanced to Double-A Springfield and registered a 4.06 ERA across three different levels in the Cardinals' organization. Levy played for three different teams in the Orioles' organization, including a short stint for Double-A Bowie. George played at two different levels in the Pirates' organization and registered a .455 on-base percentage for the Class A West Virginia Power.
Former players that plan to play or coach (if not able to play) in the Alumni Baseball Game should contact Coach Raffo by email at traffo@astate.edu or by calling 870-273-3279.
