BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (2/25/17) – The Arkansas State women's tennis team earned its first victory of the season with a 4-3 win over UAB Sunday afternoon at George Ward Park.
The Red Wolves battled to win four matches in singles competition led by victories from Julie Gauguery, Shannon O'Brien, Tori Roberts and Allison Quammen. O'Brien and Quammen each rebounded after losing the first set of their matches to pick up back-to-back set victories to help lead their team to victory.
“The girls showed a tremendous amount of guts and determination today,” A-State head coach Kel Lange said. “We have been looking for this all season and we have seen signs of it, but haven't been able to put it together for an entire match but today we were able to. I am very proud of the way the girls were able to continue to battle and not give in despite losing the doubles point and going down in the first set of some of the matches. It was a great effort from everyone today and we will build on this for our future matches.”
Quammen, who won her second match of the season, fell behind to Natalie Voss after a 7-6 loss in the opening set, but the freshman bounced back and won the next two sets 6-3, 6-2 earn the point in the No. 6 match. O'Brien, who won the first match of her A-State career, also dropped the first set to Reghan Lynch 6-4, but responded with a pair of 6-1, 6-3 victories in the second and third sets in the No. 3 match to secure the win.
Gauguery continued her excellent play and won her fifth straight match of the season with a 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 triumph over Pardis Kianoush. Gauguery's record is now 6-1 on the season with all of her victories coming in the No. 1 match position.
A-State's final point came from Roberts who earned a straight set 6-0, 6-1 win over Taylor Factor. It was the first win of Roberts' career in an A-State uniform.
The Red Wolves lost the doubles' point despite a 6-1 victory from Roberts and Quammenn over Factor and Voss. Despite the pair's first win of the season, the Red Wolves' other pairings of Gauguery and O'Brien and Jeresic and Pisani struggled to find a rhythm in their matches each losing by a score of 6-3 to give the Blazers an early lead in the competition.
A-State returns home to take on Abilene Christian on Saturday March 4. First serve is set for Noon.
