Red Wolves Earn Five First Place Finishes at Sun Angel Classic

MESA, Ariz. (4/8/17) – Arkansas State track and field competed against some of the top teams from the NCAA West Region in the Sun Angel Classic this weekend and left with five first place finishes.

Senior Erin Farmer impressed in the shot put competition as she climbed up to second in the national rankings for the event. She posted a throw of 17.93m (58-09.75) to win the event and improve upon her own school record (17.80m/58-04.75).

After a two week break, junior Jaylen Bacon returned to competition and continued his dominance in the sprints. Bacon won the 100-meter dash with a season-best time of 10.17 seconds and he moves inside the top-five nationally. He also ran in the 200-meter dash, finish second among collegians in the field with a time of 20.61 seconds. That time is a new personal-best and is second-fastest in program history and top-15 nationally.

Sophomore Michael Carr took first place in the pole vault competition Friday afternoon. He was the only athlete to clear 5.00m and finished with a vault of 5.22m (17-01.50). That result puts him inside the top-20 nationally this season.

Junior Darragh May placed third in the high jump with a clearance of 1.80m (5-10.75). The personal-best clearance moves her up to a tie for third among the best outdoor high jumps in program history. Junior De'Airis Weakley took top honors in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.09 seconds.

Also finishing with top-10 performances were; Calea Carr in shot put (6th – 14.23m/46-08.00), Sarah Michael in pole vault (6th – 3.60m/11-09.50), Cristian Ravar Ladislau in hammer throw (6th – 63.52m/208-04.75), Tiaan Steenkamp in high jump (6th – 2.10m/6-10.50), Vikitoriia Sadokhina in triple jump (6th – 12.60m/41-04.00), Shemiah Brooks in 100-meter hurdles (7th – 13.93), Calea Carr in discus throw (7th – 50.32m/165-01.00), Nick Hilson in 400-meter hurdles (7th – 52.41), Chris Collins in javelin throw (8th – 54.99m/180-04.75), Heinrich Herbst in 800-meter run (8th – 1:51.83), Channell O'Connor in 200-meter dash (10th – 25.52), Briana Hardiman in 400-meter dash (10th – 55.71).

A-State is scheduled to have a week off from competition before hosting the Red Wolves Open April 21-22 in Jonesboro.
