JONESBORO, Ark. (8/16/17) – Arkansas State head volleyball coach David Rehr announced the addition of two familiar faces as student assistants with Markie Schaedig and Kelsey Reis set to join the staff for the upcoming season.
A native of Little Rock, Ark., Schaedig will help coach the team's back row and libero, the position she excelled at for the last three seasons at A-State. She was the program's first All-American with Honorable Mention honors from the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) in 2014 and claimed the accolade once again to become the Red Wolves' first two-time All-American.
Additionally, Schaedig was a three-time Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Year from 2014-16 and was First-Team All-SBC all three of those seasons. She garnered AVCA All-Southwest Region accolades from 2014-16 and finished with the third most digs in school history with 2,153 during her four-year career. She set the school record for digs in a season in 2014 with 762 and led the nation with a 6.68 per set mark.
Reis, a native of Smithton, Ill., played for the Red Wolves from 2013-16 along with Schaedig. She will handle a good portion of the day-to-day operations of the program along with some coaching responsibilities. The former middle blocker was a two-time First-Team All-Sun Belt Conference selection in 2015 and 2016.
Reis finished her collegiate career at A-State with a .302 hitting percentage, good enough to rank as the seventh best in school history. Additionally, she registered 399 blocks during her career, which is the eighth most in program history. She led the squad in blocks in three of her four campaigns.
Arkansas State opens the 2017 campaign Aug. 25-26 at the Bluegrass Battle in Lexington, Ky. The Red Wolves open with Kentucky at 10 a.m. Aug. 25 before playing Cincinnati in its second match of the day at 5 p.m.
