A-State alumnus Joel Weems was named Associate Athletics Director for Compliance on January 29, 2013 by Director of Athletics Terry Mohajir.

Weems brings over 10 years of NCAA compliance experience with him to Arkansas State, most recently serving as the Assistant Athletics Director of Compliance at Mercer University.  Weems joined Mercer in August of 2011 and oversaw all its compliance operations, including amateurism issues, recruiting, eligibility, financial aid, benefits and playing and practice seasons under the guidelines of the NCAA, Atlantic Sun Conference and the University.

"We are excited to have someone with Joel's experience and knowledge of NCAA rules and legislation leading our compliance department," said Mohajir.  "Joel has an outstanding background in this vital area and, as an ASU alumnus and Arkansan, he is already very familiar with our University.

"This is another step to strengthen the athletics department by hiring experienced and seasoned athletics administrators," continued Mohajir.

Prior to Mercer, Weems worked at the University of Mississippi from 2002-11 as Compliance Coordinator.  During his time with the Rebels, Weems served as second in command in their Office of Athletic Compliance.  He was largely responsible for monitoring of compliance with NCAA, Southeastern Conference and Ole Miss rules, policies and protocol.

"My family and I are extremely excited to return to Arkansas State University and the Jonesboro community," Weems said. "As a proud alumnus of the University, I look forward to assisting Arkansas State Athletics in its compliance efforts."

Weems also worked as a sports information intern from 1995-97 and as an office assistant in the ticket department during the summer of 1996 at Ole Miss before accepting a full-time position in the school's compliance department.

A Marion, Ark. native, Weems graduated from Arkansas State University with his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in 1993.  Weems also earned his Master of Education in History Education in 1995 from Delta State University.  He is a member of the National Association for Athletics Compliance and the National Association of Collegiate Directors of America.

Weems is married to the former Dabney Dykes of Baton Rouge, La., and they have one daughter, Layton (3).
