SPARTANBURG, S.C. (10/28/17) – The Arkansas State women’s tennis team wrapped up its fall season with four victories on the final day of competition at the Wofford Invite at the Reeves Tennis Center Saturday morning.
Kirsty Venter, Shannon O'Brien and Shelby King each earned singles’ match victories to close out their fall season, while O’Brien and Venter competed as a doubles’ pair and earned a win in the consolation side of their draw.
The day began with doubles’ play where O’Brien and Venter defeated UNC-Ashville’s Hannah Francisco and Kylee Shipley 6-4. Venter then defeated Emory University’s Emma Perelman 6-1, 6-3, while O’Brien downed Western Carolina’s Lauren McCall 7-5, 0-6, 10-8. Shelby King also earned a victory in her singles’ draw with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Carol Sigaski of South Carolina Upstate.
“We had eight victories in this tournament and they matches we didn’t win we were competitive and took every match today we did not win into a third set,” A-State head coach Kel Lange said. “Overall this was a great way to end our fall season and take momentum into the dual match season.”
In other matches, O’Brien and Venter lost to Georgia Southern Paige Christian and Charlotte Van Diemen 6-4, while Anita Detlava and Berta Masdevall Masip lost to Emory’s Ysabel Gonzales-Rico and Bridget Harding 7-6 and Emilia Bujan and Ella Monsey of Georgia Southern 6-4.
In singles’ matches, Masip was defeated by Monsey 6-7, 6-3, 10-3, while Detlava suffered a 7-6, 6-2, 10-7 setback against Western Carolina’s Savannah Taranto.
