JONESBORO, Ark. (04/03/18) – Arkansas State men’s golf sophomore Matthew Cole took home top individual honors among a field of 74 players as the Red Wolves finished in first and second place Tuesday at the Bubba Barnett Intercollegiate at RidgePointe Country Club.
A-State’s winning ‘A’ team recorded a 54-hole total of 838 (-26), the team’s lowest total of the season, while the ‘B’ team completed the tournament in second place with a score of 867 (+3). Oral Roberts finished in third place after carding an 871 (+7), while UT Arlington ended the final day in fourth place with a 873 (+9).
“I thought we played really well, and I am proud of our team,” said A-State head coach Mike Hagen. “I thought we would play well, but when you look at the type of scores we shot, especially the 26-under by our first team, I was really impressed. I think everyone just played rally solid, and we got a lot of good golf by all of our 10 guys. They all had at least one good round, and many of them obviously played well two or three rounds.”
Cole, who is now the back-to-back individual champion of the tournament, shot a third round 69, the lowest final round score by an A-State player, to end with a three-round 206 (-10) to beat second-place Hunter Richardson of UT Martin by two strokes.
“Matt has been playing really well for us this spring, and I’m very happy for him,” said Hagen. “He didn’t play as well this fall, and he’ll be the first one to tell you that, but he really worked hard at the end of fall into the winter and then this spring. We challenged him, he accepted that challenge and got into our lineup. He likes this golf course, has always played this course really well, and it doesn’t surprise me at all that he went out and shot 10-under and won this event.”
Joining Cole in the top-five was junior Joel Wendin, who placed fourth after carding a third-round 71 to finish with a 211 (-5).
Also competing for the ‘A’ team, junior Jakub Bares completed the tournament in ninth place with a final-round 73 to post a 214 (-2), while sophomore Zan Luka Stirn finished 10th with a third-round 76 and a 215 (-1) total. Senior Tanner Napier ended the final day of the tournament with a third-round 78 to place 12th with a 54-hole 217 (+1).
Leading Arkansas State’s ‘B’ team, senior Andrew Huseman tied for seventh place with a third-round 74 to card a 213 (-3). Sophomore Patrik Jericha tied for 18th after posting a third-round 80 to record a 219 (+3), while junior Trent Jones tied for 20th with a 220 (+4) after a shooting a third-round 75. Senior Kevin Kramarski shot a third-round 76 to post a 222 (+6) and tie for 30th, and sophomore Nikolaj Dahl tied for 41st after scoring a 77 in the final round to finish with a 226 (+10).
The Arkansas State men’s golf team will be back in action April 14-15 at the Hawkeye Invitational.
“We’re talented – this is a very talented group of guys, and I think we have a lot of depth,” Hagen said. “We’ve got some momentum, and I believe in these guys and they believe in each other, so I’m excited to see what the rest of the year brings.”
