Release: 01/01/2013

Kyle Chandler, the head cross country and assistant track and field coach for distance runners at Arkansas State University, starts his sixth season with the Red Wolves in the 2014-15 season and has both programs presently achieving success on numerous occasions.

For his efforts, Chandler was honored by his coaching peers at Arkansas State as the 2012-13 Red Wolves' Coach of the Year and followed by earning the 2013 Sun Belt Conference (SBC) Women's Cross Country Coach of the Year Award recognition after leading the A-State women's team to the program's first-ever conference championship title.

Prior to A-State, Chandler held positions at Washington State University and at the Colorado prep level.  He presently is in his 19th year of coaching. At AState, Chandler also serves as the Coordinator of Music Education in the Department of Music.

In both cross country and track & field, Chandler has guided middle distance and distance runners to many successes. The A-State men’s cross country team has made significant strides in team depth and tied the 1997 team for the best ever program finish with its performance at the 2013 SBC Cross Country Championships. The A-State women’s cross country team captured its first-ever team and individual titles in 2013 while notching six consecutive years of top 15-ranked NCAA South Central Region listings, which includes top 10-place finishes in 2012 and 2013.  Chandler also helped guide former standout to two consecutive NCAA-I National Cross Country automatic qualifier meet appearances, a first in school history.

The A-State middle distance and distance athletes have performed remarkably well in both indoor and outdoor track & field, which includes the 2013 SBC Women's Indoor Track and Field Championship. Runners under Chandler’s direction have consistently improved their lifetime best marks, and more importantly, have done so while maintaining a balanced and healthy lifestyle. Not only have the all-time A-State Top 10 lists been rewritten from the 800 meters up through the 10K, but athletes have broken 18 previous school records. In the past five years, Chandler has coached the men's team to 27 all-conference honors and one Sun Belt Conference Championship title.  He has guided the women's squad to 54 all-conference honors, which includes nine championships and three Sun Belt Conference Meet records.

Student-athletes are strongly encouraged to maximize their education at A-State. The women’s 2010 cross country team earned the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All-Academic Status - #2 Nationally GPA Ranking! Most recently both the men’s and women’s cross country teams won the 2012 Sun Belt Conference award for highest team GPAs.  The men's team repeated the honor in 2013.

This academic accomplishment in conjunction with the athletic awards earned by AState student-athletes follows a trend Chandler established as head cross country/track & field coach at Mountain View High School in Colorado. His teams earned 24 Conference and Regional titles and four (4) State Championships in seven years, including two National prep rankings. He helped 137 individual athletes earn all-state status of which 13 were state champions, and 76 individual conference champions. More importantly, 215 of his athletes earned all-conference/all-state academic honors.

For these accomplishments, Chandler received Coach of the Year Awards on nine (9) separate occasions and five (5) of which were for the entire state of Colorado.

Chandler also helps guide area youth and post collegiate athletes in the sports of cross country and track and field through the USATF club – Delta Elite. He has been active in promoting these sports for youth since 1998 – coaching young athletes to healthier lifestyles locally and helping individuals achieve All-America Status through the USATF and AAU Junior Olympic programs.

Chandler ran at Midland University (MU) in Fremont, Neb., for coach Jim McMahon and at the University of Northern Colorado (UNC) under coach Scott Hall.  Chandler not only earned all-conference honors at UNC, but also achieved all-conference, all-district, all-region and Scholar-Athlete All-America accolades at Midland.

Chandler is a USATFLevel 2 registered coach in both Endurance and Sprint/Hurdle/Relay events and also an USATF Level I Track and Field Instructor.  He received both his bachelor and master's degree at UNC before going on to earn his Ph.D. at the University of Colorado.

He and his wife, Jamie, have been blessed with nine children.  The family resides in Jonesboro, Ark.
