Kyle Chandler, the head cross country and assistant track and field coach for distance runners at Arkansas State University, is in his eighth season with the Red Wolves and supports runners in their athletic and academic pursuits.
Through vote of all A-State student-athletes, Chandler was honored as the 2012-13 Red Wolves' Coach of the Year - the inaugural year of that award, and followed by earning the 2013 Sun Belt Conference (SBC) Women's Cross Country Coach of the Year Award after leading the A-State women's team to the program's first-ever conference championship title.
Prior to A-State, Chandler held positions at Washington State University and the Colorado prep level, and has coached youth, high school, collegiate and post-collegiate runners over 20 years. At A-State, Chandler also serves as the Director of Music Education in the Department of Music.
In cross country, Chandler has guided teams to many firsts and continued successes. In addition to the program's first ever conference championship, the women's team was ranked in the NCAA South Central Region top 15 for the first time in program history in 2010. Subsequently, for seven consecutive years the women have been ranked including three South Central Region top 10 finishes. The men's cross country team also achieved a program first with a South Central Region 12th place finish in 2015 and tied the 1997 team for the best ever program finish with its performance at the 2013 SBC Championships. Numerous individuals on those teams have earned Sun Belt All-Conference and NCAA South Central Region honors including individual Conference Champion and multiple NCAA National Championship qualifiers.
TRACK & FIELD
On the track, runners have performed well in both indoor and outdoor. Both men and women middle distance and distance runners have been key to multiple team SBC championships for indoor and outdoor track. Runners under Chandler's direction have consistently improved their lifetime best marks, and more importantly, have done so while maintaining a balanced and healthy lifestyle. Not only have the all-time A-State Top 10 lists been rewritten from the 800 meters up through the 10K, but athletes have broken and re-broken school records over 20 times! Chandler has coached individual men to 50 all-conference honors and two SBC titles. He has guided the women's squad to 74 all-conference honors, which includes nine individual championships and three SBC Meet records.
POST COLLEGIATES & YOUTH
Chandler has continued to coach his former athletes in post-collegiate competitions. Most notably he has coached Kristina Aubert, who was a 2016 Olympic Trials qualifier and multiple NCAA National qualifier in cross country and track & field. He has also helped guide area youth in the sports of cross country and track and field through the USATF club – Delta Elite. He has been active in promoting these sports for youth since 1998 – coaching young athletes to healthier lifestyles locally and helping individuals achieve All-America Status through the USATF and AAU Junior Olympic programs.
ACADEMICS & AWARDS
Student-athletes are strongly encouraged to maximize their education at A-State. The women's 2010 cross country team earned the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All-Academic Status - No. 2 highest team GPA among all NCAA Division I schools! For the first time both the men's and women's cross country teams won the 2012 SBC award for highest team GPAs and the teams have done so multiple times since. Numerous individuals have graduated with honors and have careers in education, medicine, business and technology.
These academic accomplishments, in conjunction with the athletic awards earned by A-State student-athletes, follows a trend Chandler established as head cross country/track & field coach at Mountain View High School in Colorado. His teams earned 24 Conference and Regional titles and four (4) State Championships in seven years, including two National prep rankings. He helped 137 individual athletes earn all-state status of which 13 were state champions, and 76 individual conference champions. More importantly, 215 of his athletes earned all-conference/all-state academic honors.
For these accomplishments, Chandler received Coach of the Year Awards on nine (9) separate occasions and five (5) of which were for the entire state of Colorado.
