JONESBORO,
Ark. (1/28/12) – Arkansas State sophomore William Oliver set a new ASU Indoor
track and field record in the men's heptathlon as ASU won four events on the
second day of competition at the ASU Invitational at the Convocation Center.
Oliver
finished the competition with 5,423 points breaking Matt Vining's record of
5,193 points that was set in 2007. Oliver won five and the seven heptathlon
events over the two-day competition including the 55-meter dash (6.75), the
long jump (24-01.00), the 55-meter hurdles (7.90), the pole vault (14-09.50)
and the 1000-meter run (2:53.17).
Ethan Turpen
finished second in the heptathlon with 4,449 points, while Thomas Ligon
finished fifth with 3,551 points.
“I was
extremely proud of Will's performance this weekend,” ASU track and field coach
Jim Patchell said. “I was proud of our entire guys who competed in the event.
We had several break personal record's and turn in overall great performances.”
A-State
senior Solomon Williams won the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 7.57, while he
also placed second in the triple jump competition with a leap of 48-02.50.
Junior Briar
Becton placed second in the 5000-meter run with a time of 16:04.29 and Brock
Westerman finished fourth with a time of 16:34.82.
Bailey Bunyan
finished third in the mile run (4:20.12), while Richard Chavez placed fifth in
the shot put (52-02.00) and Joseph Meyer recorded a fifth place finish in the 400-meter
dash (50.09).
On the
women's side sophomore Sharika Nelvis won the 55-meter hurdles with a time of
7.81 and placed second in the 55-meter dash with a time of 7.00.
Sophomore
Kristina Aubert won the mile run with a time of 5:09.37, while Rexi Parcells
finished third with a time of 5:19.13.
Senior
Stephanie Foreman finished second in the pole vault with a height of 13-03.50,
while ASU finished finished 2-5 in the 5000-meter run. Junior Samantha Salinas
finished second in the event with a time of 17:46.80 followed by Chelsea Weaver
(18:16.73), Tilda Helgesson (19:08.91) and Chelsey Roberson (19:14.26).
The women's
4x400 relay team (Allyson Perry, Kelsey Bean, Ebony Branch, Jamie Curry)
finished third with a time of 4:59.04, while Julia Agawu finished fifth in the
shot put (42-05.50) and Curry finished fifth in the triple jump (37-10.75).
ASU will
compete again Feb. 4 in Champaign, Ill., at the Blue and Gold Invite at the
University of Illinois.
