LAFAYETTE,
La. (2/11/12) - Junior guard Marcus Hooten hit a three-pointer with
seven-seconds left in regulation to force overtime as the Arkansas State men's
basketball team battled but fell 68-65 in overtime at Louisiana-Lafayette
Saturday.
A-State
fell to 10-17 on the season with a 4-8 Sun Belt record. ULL improved to 15-12
with a 9-4 league record.
Hooten
came off the bench for the first time in his A-State career to score 14. Senior
forward Malcoln Kirkland led ASU with 16 points and junior guard Trey Finn had
13. Junior forward Brandon Peterson led the Red Wolves with seven rebounds.
The Red
Wolves trailed 27-18 with 6:50 left in the first half but used a string of
three-straight three pointers to take a 30-27 lead when Trey Finn hit his
second of that stretch with 2:19 left in the half. Hooten also had a three
during that run.
ASU
finished the half on a 16-2 run to take a 34-29 lead at the break after
trailing by 12 in the early goings. The Red Wolves were led in the half by
Hooten with nine first-half points, Finn added eight and Kirkland had six.
Layups
by Finn and freshman forward Darion Griswold gave the Red Wolves a six-point
lead, its largest of the game with 14:39 left to play.
The
Ragin' Cajuns went on a 14-2 run take a six-point lead when Kadeem Coleby hit a
jumper with 7:05 left in the game. A dunk by Kirkland with 3:01 to go tied the
game at 53-53. The lead changed three more times before Hooten's three forced
the overtime.
Ovetime
was back and fourth with two lead changes and two ties, with neither team
leading by more than three.
The Red
Wolves shot 41.7% (25-60) in the game while ULL shot 44% (22-50). The Ragin'
Cajuns edged ASU in the battle of the boards 36-35, but ASU dominated the
scoring in the lane 36-24.
Bryant
Mbamalu led the Ragin' Cajuns with 16 points, while Darshawn McClellan came off
the bench to score 12.
The Red
Wolves return home for their final home stand of the season. Hosting Troy
Tuesday night at the Convocation Center and FIU on Saturday. Both tips are set
for 7:05 p.m.
