JONESBORO, Ark. (4/13/12) – The Arkansas State tennis
team picked up a 4-3 victory over Texas-El Paso in a non-conference match at
Allen Park on Friday afternoon.
Tamara Slijepcevic pushed her winning streak to eight
straight with a 6-2, 7-6 victory over Martina Tierweiler in the No. 1 match. This
marked the first time this season that Slijepcevic had played in the No. 1
singles match. She is 16-2 on the season and 8-2 in her last 10 matches.
“This was a great team win today,” ASU tennis coach
Marina Engelbrecht said. “I was pleased to see us get the doubles point after
struggling to do so in recent matches.”
Janie Nowland defeated Gabi Vazquez 6-7, 6-3, 6-1 in
the No. 3 match and Biljana Miloshevska defeated Anastasiya Sylenko 6-0, 6-1 in
the No. 4 match.
In other singles action ASU freshman Mariana Rong
suffered a 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 setback to Rebecca Calvillo in the No. 2 match, while
Ioana Teu lost to Dairya Abdrakhmonva 2-6, 7-5, 6-4 in the No. 5 match. Senior
Ceara Howey lost to Marie LeBlond 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 in the No. 6 match.
In doubles competition ASU earned the point by winning
two of the three matches. Nowland and Howey combined for an 8-2 victory over Abdrakhmanova
and Sylenko, while Miloshveska and Slijepcevic defeated LeBlond and Vazquez 8-5
in the No. 3 match. Rong and Teu suffered the only doubles loss with an 8-5
defeat to Tierweiler and Calvillo.
ASU will return to the courts on Sunday, April 15 for
a match against Southern Mississippi. First serve is set for 11 a.m.
