MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala. (4/17/12) - The Arkansas State women's golf team shot a second-round 313 Tuesday at the Sun Belt Conference Championships, improving to sixth place in the standings with a combined 618 for the first 36 holes of competition.
Despite adding eight strokes to their first round total, the Red Wolves climbed one place in the standings and will enter the three-day tournament's final round five strokes behind fifth-place UALR. Denver leads the 11-team field with a combined 581, while Middle Tennessee stands second with a 598 and FIU third with a 603.
ASU was led by Jennifer Welch, who recorded a season-best 70 for the second round. While Welch recorded an opening-round 79 Monday, her 2-under-par 70 moved her from tied for 38th place to tied for 10th.
Joining Welch among the top-25 individual leaders for the Red Wolves, Anna Carling finished the day tied for 18th place with a combined 155. Sarah Landry posted the best single-round score of her ASU career Monday with a 72, but came back to shoot an 86 for the second 18 holes that dropped her into a tie for 31st place.
Also competing for A-State, Jennifer Loiacano is tied for 36th place with a 160 and Courtney Manning tied for 38th with a 162.
The Sun Belt Conference Championships conclude Wednesday with the third and final round.
