JONESBORO, Ark. (11/03/12) – The Arkansas State men’s golf team will host the inaugural ASU Fall Beach Classic beginning Monday, November 5, at Peninsula Golf and Racquet Club in Gulf Shores, Alabama.
The two-day tournament will begin at 7:30 a.m. with a shotgun start for the first round, while the second round will be played immediately following. The final round will begin at 8 a.m. Tuesday.
The 13-team field features three members of the Sun Belt Conference, including the Red Wolves, Arkansas-Little Rock and Troy. Three teams from the Southland Conference are competing, including Nicholls State, Southeastern Louisiana, and Stephen F. Austin. Two teams from the Ohio Valley Conference are participating, including Murray State and Tennessee-Martin. Rounding out the field are Illinois State, New Orleans, Rice, Texas-Pan American, and Vanderbilt.
“We’re very excited to be hosting this event,” said ASU head coach Steve Johnson. “We’re at the end of the fall season and I wanted to do something that would be fun as a finale. We’re very thankful for Todd Edwards, former ASU golfer Matt Snowden and the rest of his staff at Peninsula for making this all happen. The team is very excited. Many of them have vacationed in Gulf Shores and played the course and are quite aware of the layout. Their finish at UMKC has given them the confidence they’ve been needing so I feel they will be very competitive this week.”
The Red Wolves had their best finish of the season last time out at the Bill Ross Intercollegiate hosted by UMKC. A-State finished third as a team among the 14 teams competing and junior Easton Key won the individual title with a 6-under 210.Vanderbilt enters the tournament ranked 15th in the country. Murray State has one golfer in the top 20 participating.
