GULF SHORES, Ala. (11/6/12) - Junior Chance Holden recorded a top-20 finish to pace the Arkansas State men's golf team as play concluded Tuesday at the inaugural ASU Fall Beach Classic. Holden, who finished tied for 14th place, shot a 9-over par 225 to lead the Red Wolves to a ninth place finish with a three-round 920.
A-State posted a score of 310 in the final round at the Peninsula Golf & Racquet Club, climbing one place in the final standings after ending the tournament's first and second rounds on Monday with a 304 and 306, respectively.
ASU finished just two strokes behind eighth-place Rice and within six strokes of seventh-place Troy. Vanderbilt took home the title with a score of 882, while Murray State and UALR finished in a tie for second with total scores of 891.
Junior Easton Key shot a 14-over par 230 to follow Holden's score for the Red Wolves, placing him tied for 35th. Senior Wessel Zwiegers and sophomore Alex Hewitt finished in a tie for 50th place with scores of 237 each. Hewitt shot a 2-over par 74 in the final round, which was tied for the second-lowest round of any A-State golfer in the tournament. Senior Matt Howton rounded out the team scoring for ASU with a 238 total for the tournament.
Three ASU golfers competed as individuals in the tournament. Leading the way was freshman Seth Garner, who shot a 19-over par 235 to finish in a tie for 45th place. Sophomore Tommy Eagan shot a 238 for the tournament, but also posted a 2-over par 74 in the final round. Sophomore Eli Mattioli finished the tournament with a 242 score.
This was the final fall tournament for the Red Wolves. A-State returns to action in the spring at the Rice Intercollegiate, scheduled for Feb. 4-5.
