TROY, Ala. (1/24/13) – Led by sophomore Hanna Qedan's first career double-double, the Arkansas State women's basketball team won its fifth straight game with 87-74 over Troy Thursday night at Trojan Arena.

Qedan finished with 19 points and 14 rebounds to lead ASU in the victory. Jalen O'Bannon scored a career high 23 points and pulled down nine rebounds, while Jane Morrill added 14 points, all of which came in the second half. Ashley Olvera also finished in double-figures with 10 points and also dished out four assists.

With the win, the Red Wolves moved to 10-9 on the season and 7-3 in Sun Belt Conference play and now are in sole possession of first place in the SBC West Division. Troy fell to 3-15 and 0-8 in conference play.

“It's a good win and it is good to get a win on the road,” ASU head coach Brian Boyer said. “Our players were very aggressive and offensively we were very good. Outside of the turnovers we were very composed and very patient at getting the good shots.”

Qedan scored 15 points in the first half, including three, 3-pointers to help the Red Wolves build a 30-24 edge with 5:13 to go in the period. Her 14 rebounds were a career high and just missed tying her career by just three points.

O'Bannon scored all 23 of her points in just 19 minutes of action, and missed her first career double-double by one rebound. She was 8-of-13 from the field and a perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line. As a team, ASU was 18-of-23 (78.3 percent) from the charity stripe.

The Red Wolves led 43-35 at halftime, but Troy outscored ASU 10-2 to start the second half to trim the lead to 47-45. However, the Red Wolves were sparked by Morrill who caught fire and hit six shots and pulled down five rebounds in the second half. With 4:29 left to go in the game, A-State held a 78-64 edge and the team hit 6-of-8 free throws in the final three minutes to help seal the victory.

“This was a high scoring game for us, but it wasn't like we were trying run or play at a fast pace,” Boyer said. “We just got really good shots and made them. It wasn't that we played a fast paced game, we played our game and just made shots.”

In the first half, ASU used a 10-0 to build a 25-17 early on and the lead swelled to 41-30 with 1:20 to go before the half. Sandy Jackson provided solid numbers off the bench for ASU, scoring six points on 3-of-4 shooting and blocking a shot all in the first half.

A-State also shot 56.1 percent from the field, including 66.7 percent in the second half, while holding Troy to just 32.5 percent from the field. ASU won the battle on the boards 47-42, and blocked a season high six shots as a team.

ASU will return to action Saturday, Jan. 26 for a home matchup at the Convocation Center against Florida Atlantic. The game is set to begin at 5:06 p.m. and will be broadcast on the Sun Belt Network through its partnership with Comcast/Charter Sports Southeast (CSS) and Cox Sports Television (CST).
