North Texas (11-19, 6-13 Sun Belt West Division). The Mean Green had their two-game winning string snapped with a 69-57 conference road loss to South Alabama last Saturday (2/23) at USA's Mitchell Center in Mobile, Ala. UNT, which has posted a 3-7 record in its last 10 contests to date, is 7-7 at home, 2-11 on the road, and 2-1 at neutral sites this season.
The Coaches: Arkansas State – John Brady (Bellhaven, 1976), 5th season, 79-75 (.513); Career - 360-291 (.553) – (5-5 vs. North Texas). Brady was named the 2009-10 SBC Coach of the Year and the District VII Coach of the Year by the United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA). He served six seasons (1991-97) as head coach at Samford and then spent 10-plus seasons (1997-08) in a head coaching capacity at LSU. Brady guided LSU to two SEC Championship titles along with four NCAA Tournament appearances, which included a Final Four appearance in the 2005-06 season.
North Texas – Tony Benford (Texas Tech, 1992), 1st season, 11-19 (.367) – (0-1 vs. ASU). Benford, a veteran of 20 years in Division I basketball, is the 17th head coach in North Texas' history. Prior to UNT, Benford served as an associate head coach at Marquette the last four seasons (2008-12). While at Marquette, Benford was recognized as one of the nation's top assistant coaches by Basketball Times, Fox Sports, and Hoop Scoop. He also had assistant coaching stints at New Mexico (1992-98), Arizona State (1998-06), and Nebraska (2006-08). Benford, who was an associate head coach at Arizona State (2004-06), played collegiately at Texas Tech (1982-86) and was selected in the fourth round (93rd pick overall) of the 1986 NBA Draft by the Boston Celtics.
About North Texas: The Mean Green had their two-game winning string snapped with a 69-57

• UNT ranks 44th among the nation's NCAA-I leaders in blocked shots (4.8
bpg.) thru games of Feb. 24. The Mean
Green is 93rd in free-throw pct. (71.4%), 205th in scoring offense (66.3 ppg.),
and 243rd in scoring defense (69.2 ppg).
Tony Mitchell ranks 18th in blocked shots (2.67 bpg.), 68th in
double-doubles (eight), and 87th in rebounds (8.3 rpg.). Senior guard Roger Franklin ranks 241st in
double-doubles (three).
All-Time Series: Arkansas State has a 21-18 lead over UNT in the all-time series dating
back to 1963-64 as the Red Wolves pulled out a 64-63 victory. ASU is 9-9 on the road, 10-7 at home, and 2-2

in ASU head coach John Brady's third
season with an 11-5 league ledger (.643 win pct.). A-State has secured the second seed and thus
a first-round bye for the upcoming 2013 SBC Championship Tournament (3/8-11) in
Hot Springs, Ark.
What A Season: The Red Wolves'
18 victories this season to date (18-9 record) represents the program's most
since 1998-99 when ASU compiled an 18-12 overall mark. The 18 wins are also the most during head
coach John Brady's tenure at
A-State, surpassing the 17 victories set twice – 17-14 in 2009-10 and 17-15 in
2010-11. The Red Wolves have compiled
double-digit victories in each of their last five seasons to date and 15 times
since the 1987-88 season.
Hot Streak: ASU has won seven
of its last eight contests and is riding a current four-game winning streak (2/9-23). In their last eight appearances (5-0 at
home), the Red Wolves have outscored the opposition by a +14.5 points per game
margin (71.2 ppg. to 56.8 ppg.) while forcing their opponent into averaging
14.4 turnovers per outing.

presently has three players with double-figure scoring averages – junior guard Ed Townsel (13.4 ppg.), Brandon Peterson (10.9 ppg.), and Trey Finn (10.4 ppg.). The three have combined to generate
49.3% (927-1,882) of ASU's scoring production this season to date. Ed
Townsel (363 pts.) alone has
currently accounted for 19.3% of Arkansas State's points output.
For Pete's Sake: Brandon Peterson presently ranks 12th
