Dr. Abby Wilson was named Associate Athletics Director for Student Services at Arkansas State University in August 2014.

Wilson arrived to A-State after serving as the Assistant Director of Athletics for Academic Services and Senior Woman Administrator (SWA) at UALR (Arkansas at Little Rock) since July 2014.  Wilson previously was UALR’s At-Risk Academic Advisor since August 2011 in which she was responsible for overseeing the academic progress of at-risk student-athletes.

“I’m really excited to have Abby join our program and the A-State community,” said A-State Director of Athletics Terry Mohajir.  “She will lead our academic efforts and continue the great success our academic units have displayed.  With Abby having served as an administrator, SWA, and a former coach, her experience will add lots of value to our program. ”

“I’m honored to continue my career in athletics and academics at Arkansas State University,” said Wilson.  “I would like to extend my gratitude to Dr. Jill Simons of University College and Athletics Director Terry Mohajir for giving me this opportunity.  I am excited to become a member of the Arkansas State family.

“This University has great enthusiasm, vision and direction.  It is an exciting time to be a Red Wolf,” Wilson added.

At UALR, Wilson coordinated the Student-Athlete Advisory Council along with supporting gender equity and Title IX initiatives as the Assistant Athletics Director for Academics and Senior Woman Administrator.  As the At-Risk Academic Advisor, Wilson counseled student-athletes on academics while assisting with class schedules, development and delivery of learning strategies, consulting with coaches and faculty on student-athlete academic progress, weekly tutoring sessions, and monitoring student-athlete study hall and academic progress.  Under her direction, UALR boasted the highest Graduation Success Rate of all Division I institutions in the state of Arkansas with a 93 percent graduation rate and 67 percent of the student-athletes had a cumulative grade point average above a 3.0 in the fall of 2013.  Wilson also assisted with the organization of UALR’s annual athletic fundraising event (SpectacUALR) along with organizing “Play for Kay”, and etiquette student-athlete and senior dinners.

Wilson arrived to UALR in August 2006 and spent one year as an assistant coach for the Trojans’ men’s and women’s tennis teams before being promoted to head women’s tennis coach in August 2007.  During her tenure, UALR received both the Sun Belt Conference (SBC) Team Academic Award and Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-Academic Team honor four consecutive seasons (2008-12) apiece while producing a College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District selection twice (2009-10 and 2010-11) and an Academic All-America honoree (2011).  Wilson, who served as UALR’s head coach until May 2013, initiated the development and managed the UALR Tennis After School clinic.

A native of Lincoln, Neb., Wilson was a four-year (2003-06) letter winner in women’s tennis at the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO).  She won five individual North Central Conference (NCC) titles overall with two (2004 and 2006) occurring in singles competition and helped lead the Mavericks to a conference championship in both 2005 and 2006.  UNO competed in NCAA regional competition all four years of her career and advanced to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen in 2005.  Wilson concluded her UNO career as the program’s all-time leader in winning percentage (.651) at the time.  The two-year (2005-06) team captain presently ranks tied for third place on the Mavericks’ all-time leaders list in both career doubles (52) and single-season wins (17 – 2004-05) while her 41 career singles victories is fourth highest in school history.

Wilson is a 2006 graduate of UNO and earned her bachelor’s degree in criminal justice with a double minor in psychology and sociology.  She attained a Master’s of Science degree in sports management from UALR in December 2007.  Wilson earned a Doctorate of Philosophy in education with a specialization in sport management and leadership at North Central University in Prescott Valley, Ariz.

A graduate of Lincoln (Neb.) Southeast High School, Wilson was a 2001 state tennis champion in doubles and a member of the 2000 Class A State Championship team.  She earned four athletic letters (1999-02) at SHS.
