Schrimpf Earns SBC Player of the Week

JONESBORO, Ark. (5/12/15) – Arkansas State sophomore second baseman Joe Schrimpf has been named the Sun Belt Conference's Player of the Week for his outstanding performance this past week the league office announced Tuesday.

Schrimpf had a fantastic weekend at the plate as he hit .412 over the past week and led the team with a .765 slugging percentage.  He had a team-high 13 total bases and was tied for the team lead in RBIs with seven over the four games.  He was also stellar in the field with 20 assists and 10 putouts with no errors during the nomination period which saw A-State go a perfect 4-0.

The St. Louis, Mo., native registered three hits in Tuesday's contest against UCA and drove in an important insurance run in the top of the 13th inning.  He also had two sacrifice bunts and was hit by a pitch once before he made all three plays in the bottom of the 13th inning defensively, including a diving stop for the final out of the game.

His best game in the weekend series against Texas State came in Friday night's contest when he drove in five runs and hit a triple and home run.  The triple plated two runs that tied the game at 5-5 before he scored the go-ahead run on a RBI ground out.  The home run he hit was absolutely crushed to left field and gave A-State two more insurance runs in the top of the ninth.  He added a hit and scored a run in the other two contests, along with driving in another run in Saturday's game.

Schrimpf has started all 49 games at second base for the Red Wolves and has hit .263 for the season, including a .373 clip over his last 15 games.  He's first on the team in runs scored with 39 and is second on the squad in homers (5) and RBIs (36).  Additionally, he has the most sacrifice bunts on the team with 14, a number that ranks as first in the SBC and seventh in the country.
