SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (9/13/16) – The Arkansas State women’s golf team wrapped up play Tuesday at the MSU/Payne Stewart Memorial with its best round of the 54-hole tournament, shooting a 298 as it moved up two spots to sixth place in the final standings.

The Red Wolves finished with a combined 923, which also included a 312 and 313 for the first and second rounds, respectively. They were led by junior Sarah Childers, who tied for ninth place to collect the second best finish of her career. She shot a 226 to tie the best three-round score of her career as well.

“Today was the biggest highlight of the tournament for our team as we reached our one-day goal, which was a 299, and beat it by one stroke,” said A-State head coach M.J. Desbiens Shaw. “I’m very pleased with their effort and especially proud of Sarah for her consistent play all three rounds.

“One of our new freshmen, Grayson Gladden, also posted two great scores, so I’m excited to see how she can grow throughout the year. We have a young team that will only get better each time we play a tournament.”

A-State finished the tournament just two strokes behind fifth-place Oklahoma City, while South Dakota State led the 15-team field with an 896. UTEP ended the tournament as runner-up and Oral Roberts took third place.

Sophomore Beth Ann Compton narrowly missed a top-25 finish for A-State, placing tied for 26th with a 231. Aracelly Jimenez Rios, also a sophomore, placed tied for 34th with a 233 and was followed by Gladden in a tie for 42nd with a 235.

Also competing for the Red Wolves, junior Kirsten Garner shot a 242 to place tied for 62nd, and senior Maci Brooks finished tied for 64th with a 245.

A-State returns to action Sept. 26-27 at the Bob Hurley ORU Shootout in Tulsa, Okla.
