TULSA, Okla. (9/27/16) – Despite concluding the Bob Hurley ORU Shootout Tuesday with its best round of the two-day tournament, a 306, the Arkansas State women’s golf team fell two spots to eighth place among 17 teams in the final standings.

Led by three players posting their best individual round today, the Red Wolves cut five strokes off their team score of 311 recorded during each of Monday’s opening two rounds at Meadowbrook Country Club.  A-State finished only one stroke behind seventh-place UTEP and within six strokes of third-place Stephen F. Austin.  Lamar claimed the championship with a combined 895, while host Oral Roberts finished runner-up with a 908.

While the Red Wolves ranked tied for second in par-3 scoring, they ranked tied for eighth and tied for 11th in par-4 and par-5 scoring, respectively.  Additionally, the squad made 55 pars to tie the second most of the tourney.

A-State was led by two players claiming top-25 finishes, including Aracelly Jimenez Rios and Beth Ann Compton.  The two sophomores both shot a 232 to tie for 25th place, giving them a combined 16 career top-25 showings between them.

“I’m excited about Aracelly and Beth Ann’s performances, but we had a disappointing finish as a team today,” said A-State head coach MJ Desbiens Shaw.  “We gave away a lot of shots at the end, and that definitely cost us a better finish.  We didn’t handle the last few holes very well.  Our team has a lot of potential, but we didn’t show it at the end of today’s round.”

Jimenez Rios posted a third-round 74, the lowest score of the tournament by an A-State player, and finished with a season-best three-round score.  Her totals also included an 82 and 76 for the first and second rounds, respectively.  Compton completed the tourney today with her best single-round score as well, a 76 that followed scores of 77 and 79 from yesterday.

Also competing for the Red Wolves, Sarah Childers finished tied for 30th place with a 233 (75-81-77), Emma Miller tied for 39th with a 235 (78-76-81) and Kirsten Garner tied for 56th with a 240 (81-80-79).

Arkansas State returns to action Oct. 3-4 at the MVC Preview Invitational, set to be played in Cape Girardeau, Mo.
