NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas (2/14/17) – The Arkansas State women’s golf team rebounded Tuesday from a slow start yesterday at the Texas State Invitational, moving from 16th place to tied for 12th in the final standings by posting scores in both the second and third rounds that ranked among the tourney’s top six teams.

The Red Wolves recorded an opening-round 326 at The Bandit Golf Club on Monday, but cut 17 strokes off that total in the second round, which was concluded today after being suspended yesterday due to darkness. The squad’s second-round 309 ranked as the fifth best among the 16 competing teams for that round.

A-State ended the tournament with a 310 that tied for the sixth best score in the third round. The Red Wolves climbed four places in the final standings over the course of the final two rounds, putting them in a tie with Incarnate Word.

Arkansas State finished ahead of Xavier, Boise State and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and within two strokes of 11th-place Little Rock. UT San Antonio claimed the championship, followed by runner-up Texas State and third-place Georgia Southern.

Competing in its first spring tournament, A-State was led by two players claiming top-25 individual finishes. Sophomore Beth Ann Compton picked up her third top-10 finish this season by recording a combined 224 (75-75-74) to place tied for ninth. Her 224 was her second best three-round total this year.

Emma Miller posted a 230 (82-73-75), her second lowest total this season, to finish tied for 22nd place. The junior has now collected three consecutive top-25 finishes dating back to the fall.

“Despite a very slow first round as a team, we managed to play much better the last two rounds,” said A-State head coach M.J. Desbiens Shaw. “I’m very proud of Beth Ann and Emma for their individual finish. Our consistency this week was not at its best, so it showed in some of our individual scores. We will be working hard these next few days and focus on putting together a good team total for our event in Arizona next week.”

Also competing for the Red Wolves, Maci Brooks placed 77th with a 248 (83-78-87), Kirsten Garner tied for 82nd with a 250 (86-83-81) and Grayson Gladden 85th with a 252 (87-85-80). Participating as an individual, Marisa Marquez shot a 250 (86-83-81) that put her in a tie with her teammate Garner.

Arkansas State returns to action Feb. 24-26 at the Rio Verde (Ariz.) Invitational.
