A-State Tennis Drops a Heartbreaker Regular Season Finale

ARLINGTON, Texas (4/8/17) – The Arkansas State women’s tennis team lost its regular season finale to Texas State 4-3 after fighting back from an early deficit to force a thrilling match clincher in the  No. 2 match.

A-State fell behind 3-0 after losing the doubles’ point and the first pair of singles’ matches, but Julie Gauguery, Tori Roberts and Allison Quammen won all three of their matches, each in three sets, to even the match at three points each. The Red Wolves’ Sabina Jeresic and Texas State’s Pippa Carr was the last match to be decided and Carr clinched the victory by winning the tiebreak in the third set to give the Bobcats the win.

“Top to bottom this was the hardest we have fought all season,” A-State head coach Kel Lange said. “The is probably the best we have played all season and I hate that the we were not rewarded with the win, but hopefully we can take this momentum into the conference tournament and continue to build on our good play.”

Jeresic won the first set of the match 7-6, but Carr rallied for a 6-2 win the second set and then took the third set 7-6.

Gauguery, who finished the regular season with an 11-2 overall record and is on a five match win streak, defeated Eva Dench 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 to help the right Red Wolves get back into the match. Quammen followed with a 2-6, 6-1, 6-4 victory over Alex Jones in the No. 6 matches, while Roberts evened the match with a 7-6, 3-6, 6-2 win over Joy Chia Ming Ming to setup the thrilling finish between Carr and Jeresic.

The Bobcats won the doubles’ point when Carr and Dench downed Jeresic and Pisiani 6-2, followed by a 6-2 win from Joy Navajo-Melendez and Ana Perez over A-State’s Shannon O’Brien and Roberts.

A-State concluded the regular with a 1-16 overall record, while Texas State has a 6-9 mark with two matches remaining on the schedule.
