NEW ORLEANS, La. (4/20/17) – The Arkansas State women’s tennis team had its season come to a close with a 4-0 loss to No. 6 UT Arlington in the opening round of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament Thursday at the City Park/Pepsi Tennis Center in New Orleans.
The Mavericks took the doubles’ point with a pair of 6-0 victories in the No. 1 and No. 3 matches to take an early lead. In singles’ competition UTA won matches 3, 4 and 5 to clinch the overall match and advance to the quarterfinal round where they will take on the No. 3 Georgia State Friday morning. With the loss A-State finished the season with a 1-17 overall record, while UTA improved to 11-9.
In the singles’ matches, senior Julie Gauguery took the first set of her No. 1 court match against Angeles de los Rios 6-4, but the pair was unable to finish when overall match was decided with Gauguery up 3-2 in the second set. Sabina Jeresic jumped to an early 3-0 lead on the No. 2 court, but fell to Astrid Gehre 6-3 in the set and was done 5-2 in the second set when the matched was called.
Allison Quammen dropped the first set of her match to Carla Cerdan Vives 6-2 on the No. 6 court, but battled back for a 6-4 victory in the second set. Vives was up 2-1 in the third set at the conclusion of the match.
In other action, Shannon O'Brien lost to Agustina Serio 6-0, 6-0 on the No. 3 court, while Victoria Pisani fell to Jessica Birowski 6-3, 6-3 on the No. 4 court. Tori Roberts also lost her match to Anna Wichert 6-3, 6-1 on the No. 5 court.
In the doubles’ point, Jeresic and Pisani lost to de los Rios and Birowski 6-0, while O’Brien and Quammen fell to Valeria Lopez and Serio 6-0. Gauguery and Roberts were down to Gehre and Wichert 4-3 when the point was decided.
