JONESBORO, Ark. (4/23/17) – The Arkansas State baseball team was able to get within 6-5 of South Alabama, but the Jaguars scored the final nine runs of the game to earn a series-clinching 15-5 win Sunday afternoon at Tomlinson Stadium.
South Alabama (25-16, 12-6 SBC) jumped in front in the top of the first with RBI singles by Wells Davis and Drew LaBounty. However, A-State loaded the bases in the bottom of the first with hits by Joe Schrimpf and Garrett Rucker before Jeremy Brown reached on an error with two outs. The Jaguars appeared to be out of the inning on a pop up by Jake Bakamus, but LaBounty missed the catch and all three runs came around to score.
The 3-2 edge for the home team was short-lived as Dylan Hardy tripled the tying run home before a RBI single and wild pitch allowed the Jaguars to score two more for a 5-3 advantage. Hardy singled home another run in the top of the third to make it 6-3, but Schrimpf homered to left-center field to begin the bottom half of the frame before a Alex Howard single later pushed A-State within 6-5.
However, USA scored an unearned run on a RBI ground out in the fourth before adding two more runs in the sixth inning to go ahead 9-5. The Jaguars then scored another six runs in the top of the ninth on five hits to set the final at 15-5.
Matt Peacock pitched the final five innings to earn the win and didn’t allow a run on three hits with five strikeouts after Tyler Carr went the first four innings and allowed five runs (two earned). Peyton Culbertson took the loss for the Red Wolves with seven runs (five earned) allowed on seven hits with four walks and eight strikeouts.
A-State was led offensively by Schrimpf’s three hits, while Bakamus had two. Hardy had four hits and three RBI to lead the Jaguars offensive outburst.
