JONESBORO, Ark. (8/27/17) – Freshman forward Sarah Sodoma scored two goals but it was not enough as the Arkansas State women’s soccer team fell to Saint Louis 3-2 in its 2017 home opener at the A-State Soccer Park Sunday afternoon.

Sodoma scored goals in the 29th and 64th minutes of the match, but the Billikens were able to score a go-ahead goal each time to prevail with a one goal victory. Her second goal of the afternoon came with the Red Wolves trailing 2-1 and in search of a way to force momentum back to their side of the field.

The Manchester, Mo., native provided that spark after taking a pass from Dana O'Boye in the middle of field and used her speed to out run the Saint Louis defense for an open shot at the at the net that resulted in a goal.

The Billikens answered, however, in the 74th minute when Isabella Palazzolo took a pass from Emma Farley just inside the 18-yard box who put the attempt away past a diving Megan McClure for the game-winning goal.

A-State attempted a late come back in the final seconds of the match when Riley Ebenroth sent in a corner kick with seven seconds to go, but the kick missed its target and bounced out of play as time expired.

“That was probably one of the more fun games that I have ever been part of,” A-State head coach Brian Dooley said. “That Saint Louis team just came off a 3-0 win over Vanderbilt and they are undefeated and they play like it. What that does is that it allows us to play and brings out the best in us and I think we saw that today.”

Saint Louis struck first in 18th minute of the match when Alyssa Seitzer scored off a free kick pass from Courtney Reimer beyond the 18-yard box. The Red Wolves answered with Sodoma’s first goal of the match in the 27th minute. Hailey Furio sent a pass on to Sodoma who out raced the defense on the left side of the field and put the attempt out of the reach of the goalkeeper for a game-tying goal. The Billikens took the lead back in the 49th minute on a goal by Maddie Pokorny.

A-State was outshot by Saint Louis 22-4, including a 9-4 edge in shots on goal. The Billikens did not make a save on the afternoon, but the Red Wolves made six thanks to the work of McClure, who made her first career start in goal.

Arkansas State will return to the field Thursday, Aug. 31 for a home match at the A-State Soccer Park against Oral Roberts. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
