JONESBORO, Ark. (10/17/17) – The Arkansas State women’s golf team won their first tournament of the season as the black team carded a final-round score of 302, while the red team tied Belmont University for runner-up honors with a third-round score of 311 at the Sage Meadows Country Club.

The tournament win marks the team’s highest finish of the young season. The Red Wolves also dominated the tournament’s individual play. A-State finished with four players inside the top-five, and five inside the top-10.

“We had a great home tournament and it was good to see both of our teams finish at the top of the leaderboard,” A-State head women’s golf coach M.J. Desbiens Shaw said. “Beth Ann and Kirsten played particularly well and carded the only rounds of the tournament under-par. We had some outstanding individual performances these past two days.”

The A-State black team, which was led by junior Beth Ann Compton, shot a 912 for the tournament. Compton carded a 222 in the event and recorded a two-under par third-round score of 70, her best of the season, to finish first overall among 23 individual players. The top finish was a season best for the senior.

Also competing for the black team, senior Sarah Childers finished fourth overall with a 226, while carding a 78 in the final round. Childer’s fourth overall finish is her best of the season. Rounding out the top-five finisher’s for the team was Aracelly Jimenez Rios, who tied for fifth place, her season best, after posting a 230 and a third-round 76. Sophomore Grayson Gladden rounded out the top-10 finisher’s for the team after posting a 235, tying her for ninth place. The ninth place finish is Gladden’s best on the season. Senior Emma Miller recorded her top finish of the season (T12) after posting a 239.

Senior Kirsten Garner led the red team, finishing with a 223, just one stroke behind Compton to finish second overall, her best finish of the season. Garner also recorded a final-round 70, her top round of the season.

The red team was also paced by sophomore Marisa Marquez, who finished a season-best 11th, with a third-round 83 to post a 236. Sophomore Monica Lieving appeared in her first tournament of the season, finishing 15th with a 241 and final-round 79, while freshman Maria Jose Atristain Vega finished 16th, her best finish, after posting second and third-round scores of 79 to card a 242.
