OXFORD, Miss. (12/2/17) – Ole Miss closed the first half on a 19-4 run and defeated the Arkansas State women’s basketball team 74-48 Saturday afternoon.
A-State (3-4) held a 15-14 lead before Ole Miss (7-1) closed the second quarter on the 19-4 run to lead 33-19 at the break. The Rebels outscored A-State 21-7 in the second quarter.
Lycia Peevy led A-State with 16 points and seven rebounds. Peyton Martin joined Peevy in double figures with 10 points. Madinah Muhammad led Ole Miss with 31 points while Promise Taylor had a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds.
A-State shot 28 percent (17-61) on the afternoon and struggled beyond the arc by shooting 3-for-17 (18 percent). Ole Miss finished 46 percent (27-59) overall and 27 percent (4-15) from 3-point range. The Rebels took advantage of 25 fouls called on A-State by hitting 16-of-24 (67 percent) at the charity stripe.
Ole Miss held a 43-38 edge on the glass and turned 23 A-State turnovers into 23 points. The Rebels outscored A-State 34-26 in the paint and 8-2 on the fast break.
How It Happened (First Half):
It was a slow start for both teams, but it took almost five minutes for the Red Wolves to find the score column. After starting the game 0-for-5 from the field with five turnovers, A-State hit five out of the next eight shots to take a 10-7 lead.
The Red Wolves led 15-14 just over a minute into the second quarter, but Ole Miss went on to outscore A-State 19-4 the remainder of the quarter for a 33-19 lead at the break. A-State hit 2-for-10 (20 percent) from the field after holding the 15-14 lead.
A-State hit just 26 percent (8-31) from the field and a 3-pointer by Lycia Peevy was the lone make for the first half. The Red Wolves struggled to 1-of-8 (13 percent) beyond the arc and 14 turnovers led to 12 Ole Miss points off turnovers. The Rebels shot 36 percent (11-31) in the first half, including 3-of-9 (33 percent) beyond the arc. Ole Miss cashed in at the free throw line hitting 8-of-12 (67 percent) while A-State was 4-for-4.
How It Happened (Second Half):
Ole Miss used a 9-0 run early in the third quarter to take a 22-point advantage, 43-21. A 5-0 spurt got the deficit below 20 points, 58-39, but Ole Miss held off any chance of a rally to set the final score at 74-48.
The Rebels shot 57 percent (16-28) in the half and 8-of-12 (67 percent) at the charity stripe. A-State shot 40 percent (9-30), but nine turnovers hampered any chance of a comeback.

A-State returns to First National Bank Arena to host UTEP for the first game of a doubleheader at First National Bank Arena. The A-State women’s team take the floor at 5:00 p.m. with the men’s game against UT Martin to follow 30 minutes later.
