KYLE, Texas (02/13/18) – The Arkansas State women’s golf team completed the final day of the Texas State Invitational by finishing in ninth place among 17 teams competing at the Plum Creek Golf Course.

The Red Wolves duplicated their first round performance yesterday by posting a second round 307 before finishing strong by carding a third round 298. With the ninth place finish, the team now has six consecutive top-10 finishes for 2017-18 campaign.

The team was paced once again by junior Aracelly Jimenez Rios and senior Sarah Childers, who both finished among the top-25 individual players. Jimenez Rios tied for 18th place after posting a 72 in the second round and a 75 in the final round to card a 223. Childers recorded a 78 in round two before finishing strong by posting a 72 in the third round to place 24th with a 226.

“I’m happy about today’s round, our team played in very difficult conditions all three rounds,” A-State head women’s golf coach M.J. Desbiens Shaw said. “As our first tournament of the season, I’m excited about the direction we are heading with some strong individual scores. Everyone stayed focused and worked hard for every shot. Aracelly fought hard for a top-20 finish and we are very proud of her efforts.”

Also competing in the tournament for the Red Wolves, junior Beth Ann Compton, sophomore Grayson Gladden, and freshman Maria Jose Atristain Vega all posted their best scores of the tournament in the final round of action. Compton posted a second round 79, before registering a 74 in the final round to finish tied for 35th place with a 230. Gladden posted another 78 to duplicate her first round score before improving to card a 77 in the final round to finish tied for 46th with a 233. Atristain Vega showed steady improvement throughout the tournament as she posted an 84 in the second round and an 83 in the final round to finish in 88th with a 253, respectively.

A-State will be back in action on Friday, Feb. 23 as they travel to compete in the Rio Verde Collegiate Invitational.
