MEMPHIS, Tenn. (8/31/18) – The Arkansas State men’s and women’s cross country teams will begin the 2018 season Saturday night at the Memphis Twilight Classic.
The annual meet is held at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex with the women’s race scheduled for 9:20 p.m. with the men’s race set for 10 p.m.
“We always look forward to this first meet of the season to shake off the dust and begin seeing what the season might hold,” said A-State cross country coach Kyle Chandler. “For the men, we have a lot of freshman and sophomores who are looking good in early practices - so this meet will allow each of them to show the work they've put in during the summer.
The women’s squad was picked fourth in the Sun Belt Conference preseason poll released Wednesday morning. The Red Wolves, ranked seventh in the USTFCCCA South Central Region ranking, are coming off a 15th place finish in the NCAA South Central Regional and fourth place finish at the Sun Belt Conference Championships.
“For the women, we have several solid returnees who we expect to run well this season,” Chandler said. “Seniors Rebecca Eldien and Anaelle Charles have looked very good early. Juniors Elizabeth Gillette, Sammy Brainard and Hannah Shelby have also looked solid. Sophomores Pauline Meyer and Kyandra Chandler as well as several freshman have also looked quite strong.”
On the men’s side, A-State was picked eighth in the preseason poll. The Red Wolves finished 22nd at the South Central Regional with four of the five scorers being freshmen. A-State placed eighth in the SBC Championship last season.
“Seth Waters, Bennett Pascoe and Jacob Oury are three of our leading sophomores this early season,” Chandler said. “Our freshman men are very competitive and half a dozen of them have a chance to make a contribution right away.”
