SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (9/11/18) – The Arkansas State women’s golf team finished its 2018-19 season-opening tournament with a seventh-place finish at the MSU/Payne Stewart Memorial after posting a final round score of 304 Tuesday afternoon at Twin Oaks Country Club in Springfield, Mo.

A-State carded a three-round total of 911 to register the seventh-place showing and was just three strokes behind host Missouri State. The Red Wolves finished two strokes ahead of Southern Illinois and also placed higher than fellow conference member Little Rock. Memphis took home the tournament title with an 860.

“I’m excited about our first tournament of the year,” A-State head women’s golf coach M.J. Desbiens Shaw said. “We stayed very consistent as a team, but lost some ground on the greens. I was very happy with Grayson’s consistency this week as well Olivia’s low round of the day at 73 today as a freshman. We will get back on the road right away on Thursday as we head to the USA Intercollegiate where we will see some good competition.”

Freshman Olivia Schmidt posted the team’s best score in the third and final round with a 73, while Grayson Gladden shot a 75 for a three-round total of 227 to lead the team and finish in a tie for 27th overall. Beth Ann Compton recorded a 229 for the three rounds and finished in a tie for 31st overall. Maria Jose Atristain Vega shot a 230 in the event, while Aracelly Jimenez Rios and Schmidt both shot totals of 231. Additionally, Marisa Marquez competed as an individual and registered a three-round total of 234 to tie for 47th place.

Arkansas State travels to Mobile, Ala., for the USA Intercollegiate Sept. 15-17 in its next event.
