JONESBORO, Ark. (12/12/18) – Arkansas State head coach Tommy Raffo announced today that nine prospective student-athletes have signed on to play baseball for the Red Wolves in 2020.

Pitcher and infielder Josh Albat, pitcher and outfielder Jake Algee, pitcher Brandon Anderson, pitcher Tristan Camp, infielder Jake Gish, catcher and infielder Liam Hicks, catcher John Hoskyn, catcher Parker Rowland and outfielder Brandon Ulmer each have committed to join the Red Wolves program next year.

“I would like to acknowledge the time and effort of our recruiting coordinator, Rick Guarno, and pitching coach Rowdy Hardy, for an outstanding recruiting class,” Raffo said. “They put together a group of young men that excel academically, bring the skill set to win championships in the Sun Belt and a goal to play at a higher level in professional baseball.”

 

Josh Albat | P/INF | 6-2 | 205 | Vilonia, Ark. | Vilonia High School
Albat prepped at Vilonia High School where he has hit .377 with a .458 on-base percentage over each of the last two seasons. He has collected 66 hits, 42 RBIs and scored 44 runs over that time and has slugged six home runs. On the mound, he a 3.12 ERA in 19 appearances with two saves to his credit. The incoming freshman has 54 strikeouts in 40.1 innings of work out of the bullpen.

“Josh is a true duel position player at pitcher and infield.  We really like what he brings to the table on the mound with a very high upside.  He brings plus bat speed at the plate and is very athletic in the field.”

 

Jake Algee | P/OF | 6-1 | 160 | Brookland, Ark. | Brookland High School 
Algee prepped at Brookland High School where has been a three-year letter-winner for the Bearcats. He has a career .381 batting average and .439 on-base percentage with 64 career hits and 48 RBIs. During his junior season in 2018, he hit .395 with 35 RBIs and 32 hits, including four triples. On the mound, Algee has a career 3.12 ERA with a 6-1 record across three starts. He has fanned 49 and has not given up a home run in his prep pitching career.

“Jake is a local product that we are very excited about joining the program.  He reminds me of Jacob Lee, who was a pitcher/outfielder coming out of Northeast Arkansas at this age.  He brings a very good arm that projects his future on the mound.”

 

Brandon Anderson | P | 6-1 | 185 | Omaha, Neb. | Neosho Community College
Anderson went 6-2 in his first season at Neosho Community College where he registered 78 strikeouts against 14 walks. He had a 13.68 strikeout per nine innings ratio and tossed two complete games across nine starts. He also tallied two shutouts, which ranked ninth most among all NJCAA players, while his 78 strikeouts were the 94th most at the junior college level.

Tristan Camp| P | 6-1 | 190 | Montgomery City, Mo. | Montgomery County High School 
Camp prepped at Montgomery County High School in Missouri where he as seen a constant progression to his pitching mechanics during his high school career. He was recently clocked with an 88 mph fastball at a Perfect Game event over the summer, which ranked him in the 87th percentile among all attendees at the event. In 2018, he helped lead Montgomery County to a conference title and participated in the district tournament.

“Tristan comes from a very long line of former St. Louis Gamers coached by former A-State Baseball Alumni, Matt Whiteside.  He provides a unique arm angle on the mound that gets hitters out.  He will help us right away.

 

Jacob Gish | INF | 6-0 | 185 | Omaha, Neb. | Elkhorn South High School 
Gish prepped at Elkhorn South High School in Omaha, Neb., where he is his team’s starting shortstop. He has a career .329 batting average with a .411 on-base percentage. He has collected 57 hits, 55 RBIs and scored 46 runs in his high school career while maintaining a .872 fielding percentage. As a junior, he hit .360 with seven home runs and 51 RBIs, with the home run and RBI totals leading the state. He also ranked in the top five in the state in triples.

Jake is a very advanced hitter coming into the program.  He will handle the transition right away into Division I Sun Belt baseball.  He can hit for power and average and plays a steady infield.”

 

Liam Hicks | INF | 5-11 | 193 | Toronto, Ontario | Mineral Area College 
Hicks appeared in 50 games for Mineral Area College in Park Hills, Mo., where he had a .370 batting average with seven home runs and 31 RBIs. He also scored 43 times and stole 11 bases throughout the season. Hicks walked 33 times on the year and a finished with a .490 on-base percentage and a .599 slugging percentage. He finished the year with 10 doubles and three triples and helped turn 14 double-plays in the field.

“We are very excited about adding Liam Hicks to the program.  He is a left-handed hitter that can hit in the middle of the order for us and make a big impact.  He can play multiple positions in the infield and can catch.”

 

John Hoskyn | C | 6-0 | 200 | Stuttgart, Ark. | Stuttgart High School 
Hoskyn prepped at Stuttgart High School in Stuttgart, Ark., where he was named to the Arkansas Activities Association 4A All-State Baseball team in 2017. He has been a started for Stuttgart since his freshman season where he has .438 batting average in 44 games with 37 RBIs and nine runs scored. He has collected 46 hits over that time with 13 doubles and has a .582 on-base percentage with a .619 slugging percentage.

“John is a physical catcher that will be a great addition to the catching core.  He throws extremely well and is a strong and powerful hitter that has pull power.”

 

Parker Rowland | C | 6-3 | 210 | Tulsa, Okla. | Bishop Kelley High School 
Rowland prepped at Bishop Kelley High School where he has established himself as one of the top catching prospects in the state of Oklahoma. In 14 games in 2018, Rowland had a .278 batting average with a .391 on-base percentage and a .416 slugging percentage. He added 10 hits with 12 RBIs and a home run.

pop from both sides of the plate.  He brings a great sense of leadership and is ready to contribute right away. He has plus arm strength and comes from a winning program.”

 

Brandon Ulmer | OF | 5-10 | 170 | Booneville, Ark. | Booneville High School 
Ulmer prepped at Booneville High School where he had a .500 batting average a junior in 2018 with a .560 on-base percentage and .988 slugging percentage. He finished with 44 hits and 44 runs batted in with nine home runs and 25 RBIs. He also added 12 RBIs and two triples and 10 walks on the year. Ulmer was named the Northwest Arkansas-Democrat Gazette Player of the Year.
