HUNTSVILLE, Texas. (12/02/12) – The Arkansas State women’s bowling team came away with a fourth place finish Sunday in the Kat Klash hosted by Sam Houston State University.

ASU entered Sunday with a 5-5 record and went 1-2 on the day to finish in fourth place.  The No. 2 Red Wolves defeated Long Island University 4-1 to win its first match, but fell to No. 8 Sam Houston State 4-2 and No. 4 Vanderbilt 4-0 to close out the tournament.  A-State finished the tournament 6-7 and now has a 24-13 record on the season.

“Even though we finished fourth, you want to finish better than 6-7 for the tournament,” ASU head coach Justin Kostick said.  “We have to win close matches and lost too many close matches this weekend.  We’ll get everything straightened out and get ready to have a strong second half of the season.”

Sophomore Sarah Lokker made the all-tournament team with an average of 218.6 per game.  Junior Ashley Rucker just barely missed earning all-tournament honors after bowling a very solid 215.8 per game average.

The Red Wolves started out day one with a win over Louisiana Tech 780-715.  ASU dropped its next two matches by slim margins falling to No. 5 Nebraska 834-832 and No. 14 Wisconsin-Whitewater 821-803.  A-State bounced back with victories over Tulane (867-621) and Texas Southern (742-671).

Day two of the tournament started out with two very close losses.  Both matches were only decided by ten pins as ASU fell to Long Island University 1012-1002 and Alabama-Birmingham 955-945.  The Red Wolves lost to No. 4 Vanderbilt 1078-1018 before earning two victories to close out the day.  A-State defeated Saint Francis College 1156-948 and Monmouth University 936-872.

The Red Wolves will be back in action on Jan. 11-13 when they host the Mid-Winter Invitational in Jonesboro.
