JONESBORO, Ark. (11/16/09) – Sophomore guard Daniel Bryant came off the bench to score 18 points and spark the Arkansas State men’s basketball team to a 93-47 win over MacMurray College in its season opener Monday.

“We had our moments tonight-we were better than that team and that’s how we played. We started a little slow, but we got it going a little bit. Daniel Bryant continues to play well,” said ASU head coach John Brady. “We are going to need to play much better than we have to have an opportunity Wednesday and Saturday to win a couple. I like where we are I like our team and I like our players.”

Bryant shot 6-of-11 from the field and 3-of-6 from three-point range, while also pulling down four rebounds.

Freshman forward Brandon Peterson scored a double-double tossing in 13 points while pulling down a team-high 12 rebounds. He also added five blocks and two assists in the contest.

Arkansas State shot 49.3 percent from the field on 34-69 while also shooting 55% (11-20) from three-point range shooting. ASU’s bench scored a blistering 62 points, while holding the Highlander’s bench to only five points.

The Red Wolves carried over its strong defensive prowess from last season, holding the Highalnders to 29.5 percent shooting from the field (18-61).

The Red Wolves dominated down low outscoring MacMurray 36-18 in the paint and outrebounding the Highlanders 53-30.

Freshman Brandon Reed had a good showing in his first game for the Red Wolves, scoring 12 points on 5-of-14 shooting, while collecting six rebounds and a team high six assists.

Freshman Adam Sterrenberg added 11 points and senior Mike Lance had 10, rounding out the double-figure scorers for the Red Wolves. Sterrenberg hit 3-of-4 from beyond the three point line while Lance was 2-of-3 from the behind the arc.

JeJuan Brown had a career-high three steals in the contest, scoring six points with four rebounds.

ASU led at the half 51-22, holding MacMurray to 22.9 percent shooting in the half.

ASU senior Donald Boone went down after four minutes of action with an injury. Brady had the following to say about the situation:

“The preliminary on Donald Boone is he has torn his ACL so that puts him out for the year, which is disappointing for me to happen. He is important to us from  leadership, positive attitude and experience standpoints. We are going to have to fill a void we had last year and were going to have this year. I hate it for him and I hate it for our team.”

Arkansas State will play Southeast Missouri State in their first road contest Wednesday. Tipoff at the Show Me Center is set for 7 p.m.
