ASU Tennis Ink Three for 2011-12 Season

JONESBORO, Ark. (8/5/11) – Arkansas State head women’s tennis coach Marina Engelbrecht announced Friday the signing of three players to the 2011-12 Red Wolves’s lineup.

Jess Heeps-Eriksen (Melbourne, Australia), Tamara Slijepcevic (Novi Sad, Serbia) and Janelle Fung (Whitby, Canada) have all signed a National Letter of Intent on to play with ASU. 

“We are fortunate to add three quality players like these three young ladies to our team,” Engelbrecht said. “Tamara is a great singles player and will strengthen our singles line up. Jess is a tremendous doubles player who will help us improve our doubles. Janelle is an all-around good athlete who will give us depth in both our singles and doubles line up. Overall these are three great ladies, and I am very excited that they chose Arkansas State University.”

Heeps-Eriksen graduated from Melbourne Girls College in 2010 where she represented the school as the No. 1 tennis player from 2005-10. She also participated in the 2010 Australian Pizzey Cup in 2010, which serves as a state championship for secondary schools in Victoria. 

She is the daughter of Robyn Heeps and Michael Eriksen and will major in graphic design.

Slijepcevic, who attended the Jovan Jovanović Zmaj Grammar School in Serbia, was named the best player under 14 in Vojvodina, Serbia, won second place in in singles the U-16 National Championships of Romania. She also reached the finals in doubles competition of the U-18 National Championships of Romania. 

She is the daughter of Darko and Tatjana Slijepcevic and will major in Business.

Fung attended Anderson C.V.I. High School and was the 2008 Central Ontario Secondary School Athletics singles tennis champion. She also reached the 2009 quarterfinals of the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations tennis championships. 

Fung was the captain of her high school lacrosse team and was the team’s top goal scorer in 2008 where her team placed third in the COSSA tournament.

She is the daughter of Gary and Debbie Fun and will major in Athletic Training.
