AUSTIN, Texas (5/25/12) -Arkansas State sophomore Sharika Nelvis stamped
her ticket to Drake Stadium and the 2012 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field
Championships by finishing second in the second heat and sixth overall in the
100m dash quarterfinals during the second day of competition at the NCAA West
Prelims Friday.
Nelvis posted a time of 11.42 in the 100 while also posting the
third-fastest qualifying time and won the third heat to advance to the
quarterfinals of the 100 hurdles, which will be contested on Saturday. Her time
of 13.17 would have broken her own ASU record but the wind was too gusty to count
the record.
Junior Solomon Williams advanced to the quarterfinals of the men's 110
hurdles with the third fastest time of the first heat and 13th
overall posting a time of 13.78.
Junior Julia Agawu finished 11th in the second flight and 27th
overall in the women's discus reaching a distance of 49.27m. Sophomore Chris Nicasio was 16th
in the third flight and 42nd overall in the men's hammer throw with
a throw of 55.84m.
Williams will compete at 7:05 p.m. on Saturday while Nelvis will compete
at 7:20 p.m. Also competing for the Red Wolves on Saturday will be sophomore
Ethan Sandusky in the men's pole vault which is set to get underway at 1 p.m.
