|A-State Football Practice Report: August 13|
JONESBORO (8/13/12) - The Arkansas State football team took the ASU Stadium field this evening at 5:15 p.m. in full pads for its 13 practice since opening its fall camp Aug. 1.
The Red Wolves were on the field for the fourth consecutive day, a stretch which also included a full contact scrimmage Saturday as part of their annual Fan Appreciation Day. The team is set to hold their third scrimmage of the year tomorrow before taking a break from its on-field workouts Wednesday.
"It was a solid practice today," said head coach Gus Malzahn. "We are getting to that point in camp where everybody is tired and you can tell their legs are weak, but we have to find a way to fight through it. It will be a real good test tomorrow because we are having a scrimmage and everyone is physically and mentally tired, so it is really going to speak of our character and mental and physical toughness to see if we can come out and get better."
"We are just trying to get our guys used to playing with crowd noise because Oregon and Nebraska are going to be very loud, and there are a lot places in our conference like that," Malzahn said. "Anytime you have to concentrate a little more it makes you think a little harder on what you are doing, and we were just trying to create that type of atmosphere."
"We did some real good things but we were inconsistent," said defensive coordinator John Thompson following today's workout. "We would make a play, but then give up a play. We'd get all 11 guys doing the right thing, and then we'd have 10 guys doing the right thing. That is where we have to shave that off.
With classes set to begin Monday at Arkansas State University, the Red Wolves will hold six more practices this week to wrap up their fall camp. A-State is set to open its season Sept. 1 at No. 5 Oregon, and will play its home opener a week later against Memphis. Oregon is one of two teams on ASU's schedule currently ranked among the top 25 in the nation. The Red Wolves will also face No. 16 Nebraska in Lincoln in their third game of the season.
