JONESBORO (8/20/12) - The Arkansas State men's golf team will host two tournament's for the first time in program history in 2012-13, both part of this season's schedule that includes five fall and seven spring tournaments set to be played in eight different states.
The Red Wolves will open their 2012-13 campaign Sept. 10-11 at the Sam H. Hall Intercollegiate in Hattiesburg, Miss. A-State will then compete in the Mason Rudolph Intercollegiate (Nashville, Tenn.) The Red Wolves will host the first ever ASU Fall Beach Classic at the Peninsula Golf Club in Gulf Shores, Ala., Nov. 5-6 to wrap up their fall schedule.
"I'm very excited about the schedule, and I know the guys are too," said ASU head coach Steve Johnson. "We're going to compete across the country this season for the first time in a while. We have a lot of talent coming back, plus a recruiting class that has both talent and experience. We're also hosting a fall event this year in Gulf Shores, Ala., which is something I've been wanting to do for a while because it helps with our scheduling. It wouldn't have been possible without the help of former ASU standout Matt Snowden, who is a Gulf Shores native."
A-State will take part in the Rice Intercollegiate (Houston, Texas) Feb. 4-5 to kickoff its fall schedule, which also includes competition at the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate (Mobile, Ala.) Feb. 18-19, Jack Rabbit Invitational (Primm, Nev.) Mar. 11-12 and Memphis Intercollegiate (Memphis, Tenn.) Mar. 25-26 prior to its annual home tournament. The A-State women's team will also be competing in a tournament hosted by South Dakota State Mar. 11-12, playing at the same time as the men's squad on the 36-hole course at the Primm Valley Golf Club.
The Red Wolves will host the 17th Annual Red Wolf Intercollegiate Apr. 1-2 at RidgePointe Country Club. The tournament will also feature the 5th Annual Wayne Wolfe College-Am and banquet, set for Mar. 31.
A-State will participate in its final tune-up for the Sun Belt Conference Championships a week later at the Old Waverly Collegiate in West Point, Miss. The league championships are scheduled for Apr. 22-24 in Muscle Shoals, Ala.
