JONESBORO, Ark. (9/9/12) – The Arkansas State soccer team pushed
its home winning streak to five straight with a 2-0 victory over Central
Arkansas on Sunday at the ASU Soccer Complex.
The Red Wolves (5-2) have not lost a match in Jonesboro since
Sept. 25 of last season, with their only non-win during that time being a tie
against North Texas.
“We have definitely had a spectacular weekend and this is the
first time all year that we have won both games,” ASU head soccer coach
Tafadzwa Ziyenege said. “Today I thought we did very well to hold off a very
improved Central Arkansas team.”
ASU wasted little time in taking an early lead. Freshman Loren
Mitchell gave the Red Wolves a 1-0 edge in the fifth minute when she headed in
a shot on a pass from Ashley McMurtry. It was Mitchell’s second goal of the
season, while McMurtry collected her third assist.
Kristina Rivera pushed the lead to 2-0 in the 37th minute
on pass from Christina Fink. Rivera now has two goals on the season, while Fink
has two assists. Fink now has eight points on the year, which is tied for the
team lead with Jena’ Kelley.
A-State outshot UCA 16-9 in the match, including an 11-5 edge in
the second half. ASU finished with nine shots on goal, including two each from
Fink and Rivera.
Aja Aguirre played all 90 minutes in goal for ASU, made nine saves
and recorded her first shutout of the season.
ASU will play its next four matches on the road, starting with a
match Friday, Sept. 14 against Southern Mississippi. The match is set to begin
at 4 p.m.
