LAWRENCE, Kan. (9/23/2012) — The Arkansas State tennis team concluded play at the Kansas Fall Invitational on Sunday with several players earning victories in their respective draws.

In singles competition junior Tamara Slijepcevic finished third in the ‘A’ draw after defeating Kansas’ Monica Pezzotti. Janie Nowland picked up a victory in the ‘B’ draw after defeating Veronique Luksich 2-6, 6-4, 10-7 and Ioana Teu defeated Milica Pavlovic (USD) 6-1, 3-6, 11-9 in her match in the ‘C’ draw.

“We played some very close matches against some very highly ranked teams in the country,” ASU tennis coach Marina Engelbrecht said. “This was a tough tournament and it will only help be better in future competition. I am very proud of Tamara for winning third-place in a very tough draw.”

Jess Heeps-Eriksen also picked up a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Gabby Pintos (UMKC) in her match in the ‘E’ draw. Freshman Chiara Stefanov defeated Liucija Smizyte (UTA) 6-4, 6-1 in ‘F’ draw competition, while Janelle Fung lost to Veronica Makashove 6-0, 6-1 in draw ‘G.’

In doubles competition the team of Teu and Nowland finished with a 1-2 record. The pair defeated Kelley/Hermsdorf (ACU) 8-6, before dropping their final two matches in draw ‘A’ competition. In draw ‘B’ the pairing of Heeps-Eriksen and Slijepcevic finished fifth after defeating Reddy/Pavlovic (SD) 8-1. The pair lost their first match on Friday, but bounced back on Saturday wih a 9-8(5) victory over Elkin/Larubi (SD) before winning their fifth-place match.

The ASU tennis team will return to competition Oct. 5-7 at the ULL Invitational hosted by Louisiana-Lafayette.
