JONESBORO, Ark. (11/04/12) – Tamara Slijepcevic and Ioana Teu both
won their respective flights on the final day of competition at the Red Wolf
Invitational at Allen Park on Sunday.
The Red Wolves also had two second place finishes in singles play
to go along with two second place finishes in doubles competition.
“Tamara and Ioana played great singles today,” ASU tennis coach
Marina Engelbrecht said. “I am really
proud of them for fighting back and winning their flights, those were great
wins for us!”
Slijepcevic faced off against Melanie Delsart (Southern
Illinois-Carbondale) in the championship of flight one. Delsart won the first set, but Slijepcevic
won the next two sets for a 0-6, 6-1, 6-4 win.
Flight four action featured Teu against Christel Amsallem
(Arkansas-Little Rock) for the championship.
Amsallem was able to win the first set before Teu stormed back for the
4-6, 6-4, 6-1 victory.
In flight two, Janie Nowland squared off against Veronique Luksich
(Arkansas-Little Rock) in the championship of flight two. Luksich was able to defeat Nowland in
straight sets 6-0, 6-2 for the title.
The championship match of flight five featured Jess Heeps-Eriksen
versus Ariadna Cairo Baza (Southern Illinois-Carbondale). Heeps-Eriksen was defeated 6-2, 6-3 to finish
second as Baza took home the title.
Flight six featured two Red Wolves in action. Sofia Krsmanovic was defeated by Suzaan
Stoltz (Murray State) 6-2, 6-1 to finish sixth in the flight. Chiara Stefanov fell to Jessica Silva
(Tennessee-Martin) in a tough match 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 to finish in fourth place.
In flight one of the doubles bracket, Nowland/Teu were defeated by
Melanie Delsart/Anastacia Simons (Southern Illinois-Carbondale) 8-4 to finish
in second place.
Biljana Miloshevska was forced to retire from the tournament and
was unable to compete with Slijepcevic in the second flight, giving Natasha
Tomishima/Jennifer Dien (Southern Illinois-Carbondale) the title in flight two.
Krsmanovic/Heeps-Eriksen were defeated by Johanie Van Zyl/Katie
McCall (Tennessee-Martin) 8-4 in flight four competition.
This tournament concludes
the fall season for the Red Wolves. ASU
will begin the spring season on January 24 against the University of Central
Arkansas in Little Rock.
