One of the leaders of this Arkansas State football defensive unit has to be senior linebacker Nathan Herrold.

Herrold earned All-Sun Belt Conference honors this season and was one of the captains of the Red Wolves' football team.

Herrold’s career at ASU is coming to a close and we picked the standout defender to capture his Bowl experience.

The Arkansas State Red Wolves arrived in Mobile, Alabama late on New Year’s night to begin its preparation for their big game against nationally ranked Kent State Sunday night January 6th.

The Arkansas State Athletic Department along with East Arkansas Broadcasters have decided to do some feature story diaries of some of the ASU players Bowl experience.

According to Herrold, the Red Wolves' first day of practice was definitely what the team needed.

“Getting here early gave us an advantage,” Herrold said. “We had a very physical and tough practice. We got in a lot of good work on Wednesday.”

This is Herrold’s and the Red Wolves' second straight year at the Bowl and the senior defender feels that this team will be better prepared than they were last year.

“It was our first bowl game in a long time,” Herrold said. “Now we know what to expect. Having all of our coaching staff intact except for the head coach will be a definite improvement over last year.”

Herrold’s first day in Mobile started by waking up at 9:00 a.m. and a 10:30 a.m. team brunch.

After the team’s brunch, Herrold and his teammates received their Bowl Gifts that included headphones, a leather garment bag, a football and other athletic gear.

“Right after eating we started meetings and taping,” Herrold said. “Being in the same hotel, being in the same city, we know what to expect, it feels like home to us.”

After practice and getting a lift of weights in, the football team returned to the team hotel to get ready for a welcome dinner and program at Ladd Peebles Stadium.

“It’s a fun event,” Herrold said. “We get to interact with Kent State and with our teammates in a fun atmosphere.”

Herrold feels that this team has the focus that it will take to get a win in this year’s game.

“We didn’t finish the season like we wanted to last year here,” Herrold said. “We have to get a win, we really want back-to-back 10 win seasons. This team knows what it’s going to take to accomplish that."

Stay tuned for a daily update of Herrold’s Bowl experience.
