JONESBORO, Ark. (4/3/13) – Arkansas State sophomore Tamara Slijepcevic was named the Sun Belt Conference’s Player of the Week after going 2-0 in singles play and 2-0 in doubles play this week, the league announced Wednesday.

Slijepcevic, a native of Novi Sad, Serbia, got ASU’s only point of its match against Louisiana-Lafayette when she defeated Sophie Van den Aarssen 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 in singles play.  She also teamed up with doubles partner Jess Heeps-Eriksen to hand the 79th ranked doubles pair in the nation of Melissa Burckhartt/Juliette Clement their first loss of the season by a score of 8-5.

In A-State’s 5-2 win over Nicholls State, Slijepcevic defeated Marie Aubert in straight sets 7-5, 6-1 and teamed up with Heeps-Eriksen to defeat Nicholls State duo of Emma Pitre/Catherine Gauthier by a count of 8-2.

“I am happy for Tamara because she’s worked hard this semester,” ASU tennis coach Marina Engelbrecht said.  “It’s great to see her rewarded for it.”

Overall, Slijepcevic has an 8-3 record in singles play and a 5-5 record in doubles play this season.  She currently owns a four-match winning streak in singles play, while she and new doubles partner Heeps-Eriksen have two straight wins.

The Red Wolves are 5-6 overall and return to action April 6 and April 7 in Murfreesboro, Tenn.  ASU will take on Tulane at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday and square off against Middle Tennessee State at noon on Sunday.
