MOBILE, Ala. (11/1/13) – The Arkansas State volleyball squad fell to South Alabama 3-0 (25-20, 25-21, 25-21) Friday night in a conference match at Jag Gym in Mobile, Ala.

The Red Wolves were led in kills by Kelsey Reis’s 10 and Mallory Warrington led A-State with 26 assists.  Sarah Kemp, Megan Baska, Kendal Davis, and Reis all recorded one service ace during the match.  Defensively, Baska’s 16 digs led the Red Wolves, while Jackie Gerig, Kelsey Sullivan, Sadie Clark, and Reis each had one block.

“I’m proud of our defense and our effort,” A-State volleyball coach David Rehr said.  “We’ve made some changes and the younger kids are stepping up.  Kelsey Reis had a fantastic game so I’m proud of her.  Our outside hitters have got to step up and be more stable.  We just have to be more consistent as a team and start winning some matches.”

The Red Wolves (11-17, 6-7 SBC) and Jaguars (10-12, 5-7 SBC) were even at 11-11 in the first set and A-State went ahead 17-15 after an USA attack error.  South Alabama took a 19-18 lead but Arkansas State tied it 19-19 after a Reis kill.  The Jaguars responded with a 6-1 run to close out the first set with a 25-20 game one victory.  Trailing the match 1-0, A-State jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the second set before the two teams were tied at 10-10 after the first 20 points.  A Davis service ace gave the Red Wolves a 12-10 lead, but an 8-3 run by the Jaguars gave USA an 18-15 lead.  A-State fought back to take a 21-20 lead on a Sullivan kill, but a 5-0 run clinched a 25-21 set victory for USA.

Down 2-0, the Red Wolves raced out to an early 7-2 lead after a Sarah Kemp kill and forced a South Alabama timeout.  Down 10-4, the Jaguars responded with an 8-0 run to earn a 12-10 lead and did not relinquish the lead the rest of the set.  South Alabama was able to stretch its lead out to 18-14 and A-State couldn’t get closer than three points the rest of the set as USA went on to win the third set 25-21 and earn a 3-0 match victory over the Red Wolves.

Arkansas State returns to action Sunday, Nov. 3 against the Ragin’ Cajuns of Louisiana-Lafayette.  First serve from Earl K. Long Gym in Lafayette, La. is set for noon.
