A-State Volleyball Falls to ULL in Three Sets
LAFAYETTE, La. (11/3/13) – The Arkansas State volleyball team lost to Louisiana-Lafayette 3-0 (25-21, 25-18, 25-18) in a conference match at Earl K. Long Gym in Lafayette, La. on Sunday afternoon.
A-State (11-18, 6-8 SBC) and ULL were locked up 9-9 in the first set before the Ragin’ Cajuns (17-10, 7-6 SBC) used a 4-0 run to take a 13-9 advantage and force an ASU timeout. After the timeout, the Red Wolves got within two points at 14-12, but ULL went on a 6-1 run to earn a 20-13 lead. A-State didn’t surrender and used a 5-0 run, capped by two consecutive Sadie Clark kills, to get within two points at 20-18. The Red Wolves got within one point at 21-20 and forced an ULL timeout, but the Ragin’ Cajuns finished the set on a 4-1 run to clinch a 25-21 game one victory.
Louisiana-Lafayette jumped out to a 10-7 lead in the second set, but A-State got within two points at 17-15 after a Clark kill. The Red Wolves wouldn’t get any closer however as the Ragin’ Cajuns went on an 8-3 run to earn a 25-18 victory in the second set. With ULL up in the match 2-0, both teams were locked in a 9-9 tie early in the third set before Louisiana-Lafayette used a 5-1 run to take a 14-10 lead. A-State got as close as two points at 15-13 on a Sarah Kemp kill, but a 5-0 run gave ULL a 20-13 advantage and the Ragin’ Cajuns ended up winning the third set 25-18 and the match by a count of 3-0.
“We’re trying to use some different lineups and shake things up a bit,” A-State volleyball coach David Rehr said. “We’re seeing flashes of good things, but obviously not enough since we aren’t winning right now. We’ve got to get back to our winning ways from the first half of the conference season and turn this thing around.”
The Red Wolves were led in kills by Kendal Davis’s eight, while Kelsey Sullivan registered seven kills on a .438 attack percentage and Kelsey Reis also added seven kills on a .429 attack percentage. Mallory Warrington handed out 29 assists to lead A-State and also added seven digs. Defensively, Megan Baska led Arkansas State with 12 digs and Davis added two block solos.Arkansas State returns to action Friday, Nov. 8 against Troy.
