NEW ORLEANS, La. (12/5/14) – Senior Sharika Nelvis of Arkansas State University has been selected this week’s (May 12) United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division I National Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Athlete of the Week per an announcement made this Monday (May 12) by the USTFCCCA.
Nelvis won three sprint events at the 2014 Sun Belt Conference (SBC) Outdoor Track and Field Championships this last weekend (May 9-11) in San Marcos, Texas and concluded the action as the meet’s top overall scorer with 38 points. A two-time (2012 and 2013) USTFCCCA All-America Outdoor Track performer, Nelvis placed first in the 100-meter hurdles, 100-meter dash, and the 200-meter dash at the SBC Championships for the third year in a row. She clocked a wind-aided 12.67 time in the 100-meter hurdles before sprinting an 11.17 time in the 100 meters and had set a time of 22.70 in the 200-meter dash. Nelvis, who broke her own A-State marks in those three events, also eclipsed a personal previously-held conference outdoor 100-meter hurdles record as her 13.00 time in the preliminaries this past Saturday (May 10) bettered a 13.08 time set last spring. The Memphis, Tenn., native claimed runner-up honors in the long jump at the league meet with a 20-07.00 (6.27m) performance.
A two-time (2012 and 2013) SBC Women’s Most Outstanding Track Performer Award recipient, Nelvis presently holds the nation’s fastest 110-meter hurdles time (12.67) in NCAA Division I this season. She ranks fifth among the national leaders in the 100 meters (11.17) and is tied for 30th place in the 200 meters (23.29). Nelvis currently occupies third place on the West Preliminaries leaders list for the 100-meter dash and is 17th in the 200 meters as a result of her league-leading 22.70 time. In the long jump, Nelvis ranks in a 19th-place tie nationally and is tied for seventh among the West Prelim Qualifiers with a conference-tying best 20-06.84 (6.27m) distance.
Nelvis was successful in continuing an undefeated 10-meet winning streak in the short hurdles (55-, 60- and 100-meters) dating back to the start of the 2013-14 indoor season.
Last season, Nelvis achieved NCAA-I Women's Track National Athlete of the Week Honorable Mention recognition by the USTFCCCA in the outdoor campaign (May 14).
